There are few large cellphone operators because you need a government license. Radio frequencies should be homesteaded and traded as property right, not handed out by the government. Government distribution of good will favor the large and politically connected organizations.

Government is the greater evil. If you don't use a cellphone, Verizon will not charge you anything. Try not paying taxes and let me know how it works for you.

Stupid. This has nothing to do with "greed". It's obviously a bad PR move from Verizon, it will cost them. They do not care that much about an unpaid $20 bill.

This story is about how large centralized organization become bureaucratic and fail to act efficiently.

Now the sad part is that the people who are the quickest to talk about "greed" are also the one who will want the government (n.b. a large centralized bureaucratic institution) to step in and prevent "greediness"

I'm in the middle of it, but it looks like the turk was going to be integrated inside the precursor of skynet by the redheaded terminator CEO whose name I can't recall. In all cases, if we're supposed to be believe it is, my point still stands.

  6. Medidative and complex ? on Sarah Connor Chronicles — Why It Died · · Score: 2, Insightful

I avidly watched that show, but come on. This is all about the fun of seeing Sarah Connor and Cameron trying to look normal. And Cameron beating up people of course (cue xkcd etc).

It's by no mean meditative or complex. Take for example the Turk. A chess program is one of the root of Skynet? Give me a break. Chess programs were cool and impressive 10 years ago. Chess is a narrow game, it's not a measure of intelligence.

Say the writers had picked "Poker" instead. Now that would be interesting. First of all, the show would ride on the wave of popularity of the game... second the game is much more complex. Third, the game requires bots to have a model of the opponents behavior, especially human behavior. Now that's interesting. There are many many ideas that could have been explored. Instead the writers choose the cheap trope, chess = intelligence, chess program = AI.

They could also have tried to explain why skynet does not entirely wipe humanity in the first second of its existence... I mean terminator robots? A super intelligence can surely engineer something more subtle, like a virus.

The only explanation I find is that skynet is mildly retarded, it has the mind of a teenager from the 80's and think robots are cool.

I'll stop here. TSCC is cool but not meditative or complex.

No you're just ignorant, no cynicism involved. If corporations could increase their profit by rising the price of their goods, they would already have done so.

What will happen is that the marginal producers will go out of business or marginal production will be cut. The lower supply will make the profit maximizing price higher, and then they will rise their prices.

There will be less good produced, less services offered and they will be more expansive. The corporation lose, the customer lose, the rent seekers which consume $1 of wealth to obtain $1.05 dollar of public funds will win.
