Speaking as someone who has migrated numerous, large, corporate clients away from Windows crapware, the costs of migration are trivial compared to the costs of trying to keep a Windows business network "running". In every instance, I've been able to demonstrate that the migration and training costs are less than 6 months of Windows "support". I have never had any corporate client refuse to migrate.

Windows is no longer suitable for business.

I'm currently migrating a BIG bank away from MS - they like the security, reliability, and reduced costs of FOSS. Their servers were already using FOSS - it's now desktop migration time. There have been no training or support problems.

Most worthwhile optimisation is done by rethinking the design, and to a lesser degree hand-coding parts where you know the realities better than the compiler can guess, and just how to exploit that.

Microsoft are completely screwed - they have nobody left who understands the "legacy code" - that huge, monolithic binary blob at the middle of the kernel that is totally undocumented and untouchable. The NT kernel is all they have, and it's unmaintainable.

You speak of Vista as if that were the only product we had.

Vista is the only MS product that anyone's interested in at the moment. It has been a total disaster. Most of the drivers won't work, so much of the available hardware is crippled. The incompatability with earlier software loses it friends too. The latest iteration of Office has incompatable file types, and has so many broken "features" that it's unsaleable. MS have missed the point entirely, and are now scared by Ubuntu and Google. It's only a matter of time before the edifice crumbles...

You've lost that bet - certainly in terms of units sold, rather than monies received! The uptake of just one paid-for Linux distribution in the last quarter far outstripped Vista and XP sales put together. You're overlooking the massive uptake of Linux in China (where they do pay for their distros) and in India as well. Microsoft is now a minority player in those gigantic markets. Microsoft is also losing out in Europe - many local government authorities refuse to allow MS products to be used at all.

Speaking as a traffic engineer: there are several types of detection used. Loop detection is the most accurate, but the most expensive - it requires cutting into the road surface, so installation costs are high.

The predominant method is MVD - Microwave Vehicle Detection. It's cheap, and can be quite accurate, but never accurate enough for prosecution! If you're prosecuted and the only "evidence" is radar-based, contest it. Demand to see a demonstration of the calibration accuracy of the equipment. The county won't be able to provide this detail, so you'll be exonerated.

Also, a police officer can't hold a "speed gun" steady enough to eliminate inaccuracies - again, also contest the "evidence". If the gun is handheld, you cannot be successfully prosecuted. The Police will invariably refuse to produce the "speed gun" in court - they won't have valid calibration certificates anyway - so you'll just waste the Court's time with another failed Police prosecution.

If enough people actually stand up against the speed Nazis, they'll realise that they can't afford to bring all these spurious prosecutions...
