What if you are reading it on the day you are getting married?? Does that count for anything?

  3. Re:that's odd on Debian Chooses Logo · · Score: 1

They aren't likely to be bringing any IP lawsuits (unless someone violates the GPL on, say, dpkg and they decide to fight it). They might, however, have to deal with trademark lawsuits. They probably won't fight any actual suits-- they don't have the money-- but they have to make sure people don't use their official logo indiscriminately. It would degrade the trademark and eventually they would be unable to defend it. That's the reason Slashdot has to use the styrofoam cup for Java instead of the real logo; Rob got mail from Sun telling him to stop using their trademarks Or Else. Sun, unfortunately, does not provide and "unofficial" logo. Debian does.

The fact is, if you're running a version of sendmail or Apache for which there are known and published exploits, you are going to get exploited eventually, regardless of what information you put out, and you deserve what you get for being a crappy sysadmin and not staying aware of security issues in the software you run.

And regardless of the admittedly weak ``you shoulda fixed your software'' argument, it is important for network software that interacts with other software to make itself identifiable to other software so that the software that interacts with it can work around its brain-damages. Admittedly, in a perfect world, software shouldn't have brain-damages, but one man's feature is another man's blemish.

Well, most complex apps have their own cut+paste buffer for complex stuff (like pasting images, or keeping things in the cut buffer for a long time), but for simple get-the-data-into-the-app sort of things, there's a universal X selection buffer. Just select something and middle-click in the correct widget of the window you want it in. If you don't have a middle mouse button, your X server may be set up to emulate one when you click the left and right buttons together. If you only have one mouse button, I'm afraid you're beyond salvation. :)

  17. Ice on the moon? on Name that probe! And 3 more years of duty for Mir · · Score: 1

Unfortunately, the ice discovered on the moon is thinly dispersed through the soil, making it very difficult to extract. Add to that the energy expense of separating the oxygen and hydrogen (remember, when you recombine them you only get back what you put in to separate them, minus some pretty big efficiency losses) and the moon isn't terrific as a fueling base. It does, however, seem better than an orbital space station for many purposes, largely because you don't run the unnecesary risk of more flying crap.

Perhaps someday if we set up a Skyhook, we can more efficiently lift material into orbit, from where they can be sent to the moon to be assembled and launched cheaply. :)
