  1. Re:Notice thier Database worries on Power Outage Takes Wikimedia Down · · Score: 1

Funny, I used to work for the ZZZ, in White City. My Sig. Oth. still works there and there's a bloke on her train who's implementing a broadcast archive to digital storage project. It sounded interesting, VERY large scale project..

  2. This is exactly what I've been worrying about. on Power Outage Takes Wikimedia Down · · Score: 1

Today in fact. I built a wiki to work as a knowledgebase it works superbly on a small scale, there's a possibility of using it on a larger scale. My main concern is the databse, I'd like to port it to DB2 (we're an IBM shop) as I don't want to be the one that gets fired when what happened to wikimedia happens to me. Might even get them to hire someone to do the job, if they're feeling generous...

    How so?
What youre not factoring in here is average salary. Even the guy sweeping the streets here gets the equivalent of about $90,000 US. As an IT pro I'm close to 300,000 USD before tax (at 24% up to 500,000), so at a percentage of salary per year? You yanks are really getting screwed.

  4. Re:Yes, but Sun will not survive. on Sun Chief Calls Out IBM, Demands Compatibility · · Score: 1

The cost of Sun/Solaris is insignificant in relation to the cost of overall service delivery. Having used Windows, Linux and Sun servers over the years in a large scale production environment the choice is simple, and Solaris/SUN win for what I'm involved with, that means webserver, Application server, and Database functionality. I'd rather be supporting these systems, because when put together correctly they simply do not go wrong. Getting a Solaris Admin *usually* means you get someone who knows what they're doing, whilst a Linux SysAdmin could be any tinkerer, with windows techs, from where I sit, you're looking at so many monkeys.

Remind me never to ask you to build me a PC. Let's not forget how cheap these parts are. Compare the prices to genuine SUN parts, which are built to be reliable (or were). We pay £200 for a card that costs £2000 in a SUN box, who cares if a few expire?

This is to be dealt with later today. MPs in the National Union of Journalists' Parliamentary Group are also tabling questions." From www.theregister.co.uk
