First and foremost, the media DID cover the 20,000 dead and many more displaced due the tsunami, it was all over the news. Secondly, the nuclear situation is ongoing, and, I know you don't realize this so I feel it's my duty to teach you: NO MATTER HOW BAD YOU FEEL ABOUT THE 20,000 DEAD, NO MATTER HOW MUCH MEDIA COVERAGE THERE IS, THEY AREN'T COMING BACK.

Comments like these always make me laugh, as if somehow constantly feeling bad about the past can somehow change it? You cannot revive those people, but meanwhile Japan still needs power, the families of the victims still need power. Making people feel bad about things they can do nothing about isn't even remotely productive.

Actually, funding for a lot of these types of grants is drying up, this kind of spending has been in the Republican bullseye for a long time, and has suffered during recent budget "crises" due to Republicans picking these kinds of grants specifically to harp on(despite the fact that they make up less than 3% of the overall budget, and probably are one of the few effective government programs...) Basically they are trying to distract people from the fact that Republicans are unwilling to make real cuts and as an added bonus, are focusing on programs that primarily benefit their "enemies" (i.e. anyone who isn't either uber-rich or an uneducated white). Class act those Republicans.

one of the more popular places in Tokyo only charges 5,000 yen(about $50) per person for parties of 2 or more, complete with an all-you-can drink(alcohol, not that soft drink crap they have in the US :P). Doesn't sound very cheap, but there aren't a lot of places you can get an all-you-can-drink with food for less than 5,000 yen. Just FYI, you get fried whale, whale sashimi, whale soup, and some udon noodles for your cash. I actually had it before, not bad.

I guess the "profit" for that sale really depends on the amount of time put into it(and how valuable you consider your time). While the games did retail for $50-$80 a pop, most snes games nowadays can be found at garage sales/flea markets/online auctions for less than $10. If you use that as your yardstick, the person is probably "making" at least $5k(while your Super Mario Worlds go for $10, the rare games are worth many times what the original asking price was, so you have to factor that in). However there is a considerable time investment necessary to find each game, ascertain it is working, catalog it etc. We are talking a couple hundred hours easily. You spend 200 hours plus tie up a lot of your money to make $5k, it doesn't seem so profitable anymore.

Um, no, not really. While Seagate doesn't explain their caching strategy, my guess is that unlike things like bcache, which cache at the block level, the seagate probably caches at the logical file level, which would explain why it's Windows only, they only implemented their algorithm for NTFS. My guess is they broke with tradition and implemented a disk that is aware of the logical layout of the files on it, instead of one that simply manages blocks(with file metadata just being another one of those blocks)

File level caching has a lot of advantages, for starters there tend to be a lot fewer blocks than their are files, meaning that the overhead imposed by the caching algorithm is a lot lower(flashcache for instance uses 500 megs of memory per TB of storage IIRC). Furthermore, by caching at the file level you can apply heuristic rules like not caching movie or music files, where performance is very unlikely to be critical etc.

Of course this all comes at a cost, having the disk actually know about the logical layout of the file system does break a lot of conventions and introduces a large # of potential issues....Trying to upgrade the file system on one of these things is probably not very pretty.
