Bzzzzt! Wrong answer! Jeffords didn't defect until 2001, it was because of the way the Bush administration treated him. He appearently wasn't ideologically pure enough for the Bushies so Karl Rove decided to hold a dinner for Vermont Teachers and not invite him. That tended to piss him off so he changed his affiliation to Independent to punish the Republicans. You think they would have learned their lesson, but alas......

Not saying you are wrong, I agree that private sector research and development has lagged for a long time(well, ever since the term ROI became a buzzword really, everyone is focused on short term) but I don't think it's fair to say they are doing nothing, they just don't publicize as much as universities do.

Personally, I don't care that you use the patch, but it might detract a little of the joy of finding these obscure things and getting the rewards.

The total force in Afghanistan is only about 18,000 troops and that includes all the troops from all over the world. But instead of the gap in the center of the controller, there was a qwerty keyboard with tiny keys. Interesting, but it really wasn't worth it to me, since I didn't lug my ps2 along for the trip, and I really don't like online gaming.

Even the American commander in Afghanistan said he counts the French troops among the best he has. Last time I checked, large parts of Afghanistan are deserts, and very rough deserts at that.

I beg to differ. People seem to think that "coding" is the only important aspect of software. It's far from it.
Case in point, MS Windows. I actually read a book on programming security from the head of security at Microsoft(yeah, laugh all you want), and it gave some interesting insight to the corprate culture at Microsoft. The talking heads at the top want a shitload of features, and they want it by an unrealistic deadline(which, with the exception of longhorn, they almost always meet), and security gets pushed to the back, and maybe only added in as an afterthought.
Contrary to popular belief here on /., MS does not hire idiots to write their code, but even good programmers aren't miracle workers. When they have their hands tied with a looming deadline and a feature list that only grows longer, they can't do it all, and bugs are bound to sprout up.
I think Linux main security advantage lies not in that almost anyone in the world can look at the code(though that helps) it's that there is no "mono culture", you get a lot of interesting ideas contributed to the kernel, some are good, some not so good. Eventually the bad ideas fade away and you are left with a very solid operating system.

Or you could be really stupid and used nuclear weapons. China would have LOVED that. Or Clinton could have just used tough words but left North Korea to it's own devices like Dubya and they could have even more bombs and missiles by now. What a great idea!

Being a green you would have thought he would have heard about the green revolution part of which includes pesticides. Farming is much better today than it was, "thousands of years ago" in part because farmers can now kill insects which used to devour fields. In fact, most, if not all of the famines of the 20th century were not because there wasn't enough food, it's because the corrupt governments in those land would not allow food to be distributed. I'm not claiming that pesticides are a great and wonderful thing, and their use certainly needs to be limited and alternatives researched, but saying that we don't need them because people grew food for thousands of years before them is just plain dumb.
Is it too much to ask that a presidential candidate change his ideology to match the facts instead of trying to change the facts to match the ideology?
