If you'd ever taken a *good* college freshman English class, you would never have those opinions.
High schools teach you how to put words to paper. But it takes a new level of intellectual achievement to learn how to *write*, which is only available at good universities (well, and private prep schools, but most people don't go to those).
But knowing how to really write is a huge advantage and useful tool, even for engineers of various sorts.
If I couldn't find a really good use for it, I would respond instead by locking it down and making it a really *good* file server/backup machine. I'd kill any process that isn't directly necessary to file serving and the function of the machine. More programs running == more potential security vulnerabilities, and these are your *backups*.
P.S. you do have offsite backup as well, right? Juuuuust checkin'.
Most people don't understand computers at all, the way we do (slashdotters). Their feelings about it could be summarized essentially as "Zeus has frowned on us" and that's that.
Truly a special bummer, but that's life, isn't it? And I hope your girlfriend gets lucky for real on the next draw.
Although I respect your opinion on this, I have to say that I disagree.
You may think that in America have it good (and I would agree), but to think for a second that it is good *enough* is sheer madness. Society is not static, and to paraphrase Rush, "Change Is." (hehe)
As free as we may be, the appropriate way to comport ourselves is *always* with an attitude that we should demand our rights all the time, because otherwise, inevitably, we really will lose them--it's only a matter of time, be it a dozen years or two hundred.
So I don't think the right thing to do is for Americans to be content and happy and not bitch about the status quo. Yes, we may be whiny bitches, but this way we will *stay free* whiny bitches.
My personal belief is that it's simply kinda cool that the Universe is constructed in such a way, that, altruistic behavior is a survival characteristic. If that is the "intent" of the universe, then that is very nice.
I don't think it is a zero sum game, and therefore the notion that they are "winning" and we are "losing" is nonsense.
After all:
Most countries in the world envy our 91% employment rate (or 9% unemployment rate if you see the glass as less than ten percent empty).
We may lose manufacturing jobs, but that does mean stuff is much cheaper to buy for us. From a purely selfish point of view, I'm aged 40 and in my lifetime I've seen the cost of crap in general plummett, especially in the last 20 years.
If anybody's "losing", it's the Chinese worker. Unfortunately for us, they are losing but still better off than they were...presumeably.
It's pretty clear the current owners aren't really interested in it any more. All good and understandable--but why not sell it on then to someone with the vision to take it into the future?
Shame to see so few posts on what was once the center of the geek universe.
It seems pretty clear to me that the Linux desktop is going to be Android, or some future variant. The steps from phone to tablet to laptop to desktop are not too hard to imagine, as people get used to the environment.
i wish i could mod you up "funnier". ;-)
You mean you can compile and run this code on your Windows phone?
You, sir or madam, are missing the point. Source code alone is meaningless if you can't actually *use* it.

just trying to help
I feel your pain but...it's a computer...PROGRAM it. Staying up til 2am to do something on your computer is, generally, asinine.
Ever hear of a cron job?
Just trying to help--really!

Because they are easily fooled by big (huge, massive) insurance companies with very deep pockets.
It's not that hard to get someone to vote squarely against his self interest.
Keep the faith, buddy. Change can and does happen all the time--and it *always* starts at the smallest level, one person at a time.
It does take time.
Thanks for reminding us once again of why even excellent proprietary drivers still suck balls.

Well said.
Uh, you mean hacking a computer is like shooting someone?
Really?
That is absolutely fucking hysterical.
"This kind of abuse will continue until the customers realize that the phone belongs to the customer, not the phone company."
TFTFY.
Hey, thanks for the tip--I was totally just slinging it in there from my url bar without even thinking about it.
Presumeably this:

A method for applications to access a lower level of the OS than X, according to my naive understanding. Sounds a lot like directX?
It would be more accurate to say, "isn't *believed* to be vulnerable..." don't you think?
Sounds like your company needs to work harder on "setting expectations".
I don't think anybody is saying that nukes can do no wrong--just that there is no better option.
You mean copyrightly absurd.

Android will take over the world!
