Actually I've been appalled recently at the success of "streaming" services like Netflix. They are succeeding because they are very cheap and easy to use. So they are, at least, providing some value. But they still suck if you are in to quality at all.
But check out Tivo sometime--they are turning into the grand central station of DRM and many people like it.
In other words, though I'm highly sympathetic to your position--don't get cocky. These fuckers are highly (if inappropriately and stupidly) motivated. Think War on Drugs. That can't work, either.
I used to bemoan the level of effort of students, until I realized that that's how it has always been, and likely always will be.
Most people just aren't scholars or engineers. The bright ones will always pursue knowledge--on their own, if necessary.
I don't think the Japanese emphasis on school produces more bright people, even if they are educated (which is good, to be sure). But until I met my first overeducated person, I didn't understand what that term meant! These days I'm not so concerned about it.
This is only true if the elections are reasonably free. Candidates in Iran have to be vetted by those in power to be able to run. And it also seems that massive vote fraud is a regular occurrence.
People have been tolerating piss tests to get/keep jobs for years, and the inevitable result is that employers reach out for more.
The thing to do is apply for jobs when you have one (ideally), and refuse piss tests when asked. If enough people start turning down jobs for that reason, it will go away.
I disagree with one point--that general computing environments are inherently less secure.
Windows is inherently less secure--but OSX and Linux are at least as secure as iOS and Android, and other walled gardens. If nothing else, they are less exposed to the problems of monoculture.
But do you really want a robot with human-level decision making skills pointing a gun at you?
I haven't noticed Asimov's Three Laws being programmed into anybody's robots, yet, here in the dawn of the era. Pretty sure that's not going to happen.
Why do you keep your money invested in them when they make all these poor decisions? I mean, their stock has been falling or flat for a DECADE.
It seems to me your analysis of their business moves is a good one. I'd wait until they show signs of recognizing the essential truth of your words before investing in them.
No man, trust me, if it's your job to get customers for a business, you lust for really, really good leads. People that fit all the categories of your customers are much more efficient (and vastly cheaper) to market to than the general populace.

Well said.
Do you force yourself to watch the commercials on your Tivo?
The market is always selfish--the selfish thing is trying to fix a price on something that isn't really real--data.
umm...you do realize it's their crappy OS that allowed the botnet to be so large in the first place, right?
You present a false dichotomy. They will suck in both ways, I can assure you.

In other words, we're enjoying life now that we can?
Not sure it's a national disaster if we can't keep up with our empire building.

So no.
Not a problem--if they move the clocks forward by two hours, just move your own "hours of operation" *back* by two hours. Done.
Dude srsly think outside the box! lol. Not much of a box here rilly...

But America will have to grow some balls, first.
Hey your tinyurl in your sig just goes to their main page.
I was curious about that and still am.
sry i thought one didn't go into academia for the money?
That's a really good idea.
Dude...are you out of your mind? Who does the system belong to, anyway?
If I hack my microwave, am I violating the manufacturer's rights?
Don't be such a tool.
Well said. Mod parent up!
Uh, then why only one new article in the last month?

That's why I won't be buying one.

But I think everything else you say is spot-on.

Personifying computers is a bad idea.
just sayin'

Frankly, it's going to be ugly.

I think it's more about building mailing lists.
However, down the road, perhaps.

Mod parent up. As sad as it is, it does appear to be necessary.
