    I don't!  But I know that I can, and occasionally I do indeed go grubbing through the source when I'm looking for explanations of it's behavoir.

    Running a server, especially a web server, is THE most difficult system administration task there is.  You have to simultaneously allow access to the world to some bits, while simultaneously allowing access to other bits only to authorized individuals.  All while being naked to the world.

    This requires a rational, knowable system to even be reasonable to attempt.  If you don't have the source, you cannot know it--and I don't give a damn how wonderful your knowledge base is.  MS's knowledge base IS good, and it's the standard response I get to this from Windows zealots.  But they remain blind to the fact...that they are blind, ultimately, as you are forbidden from truly understanding your server software.

    I keep asking people--what did you get for your money?  They always answer, "I own the song".  Really?  Do you?   You can do whatever you want with it?  And they say, "Oh, well, no, of course not.  I guess I have a license for the song, to play it whenever I want."  To which I respond, "so you bought a license."

    And they all frown and shuffle their feet and say they guess so.

    You haven't bought a fucking thing.

    When I was in about the tenth grade, I went to the boy's room during lunchtime, where the smokers traditionally congregated.  Something was wrong--I couldn't put my finger on it, but standing there at the urinal I was strangely hesitant to relieve myself.

    All of a sudden, I realize there's several girls hanging out with the smokers, all of them staring at me and giggling, and me standing there in front of the urinal doing nothing.

    I didn't see them in there because I wasn't looking for girls in the boy's room.

    Needless to say--I pay attention to this day!

    I, like many slashdotters, was a fairly early adopter of computer and internet technology.  In the mid 90's I had a couple-year spell of IRC addiction.  The I realized what a dumb waste of time it was and got over it.

    I think the general population is just going through a similar phase, now, that many of us went through years ago.

    Of course, there are always those without any common sense who don't realize their lives are being ruined by Crackberries, WoW, or some other thing which isn't really as good or fun as it seems at first.

    You're right, those countries are not good examples of the triumph of capitalism and democracy--because they don't have those, there.  They just aren't communist.

    They are corrupt and authoritarian--which is why they don't work.  And communism inevitably has the same issues, which is why it will never, ever work.

    Phfthsphth.  I'm paying out the nose for their "commercial" speeds, and I get at best 1mbps download.

    And upload still sucks, just sucks a little less.

    I am deeply unhappy because I have no other options, and it is overpriced.

    You're making a huge value judgement here without anything to back it up.  Why SHOULD something not be free even if "the person" does not "choose to give it away"?  Are you really sure about that, in all cases?

    I wasn't suggesting they should care what I think per se.  I'm suggesting they should stand up for their own human dignity, and that in fact that is probably their responsibility and their problem.

    Anyway...you can't "steal" technology, any more than you can steal any string of bytes, like music.

    Or are you suggesting we try to keep them in the stone age?
