It is nice to see another big free software release. Hopefully, as larger and larger companies put their weight behind linux, it will be come more and more mainstream. Hopefully, in about five to six years, we will see linux have a majority share in the server market. Maybe, using the collective might of all the linux companies, you may even be able to muscle Microsoft around a little bit. One can dream :)

  3. Great Game on World of Warcraft News · · Score: 5, Insightful

True to its nature, Blizzard has created a game that improves on almost every aspect of the genre instead of trying to be too original. The largest drawback to their game is the lack of meaningful PvP, which many seasoned veterans are drawn too. However, there is some speculation that they will go the DAOC route (with keeps, PvP points, realm wide benefits) that will add some meaning to PvP. Even in beta, it was more polished than most games were after two-three years in the market. Even with a spectacular launch where over 250,000 units were sold in just the first day, and had a record 100,000 playing on the afternoon of the launch, they seem to be commited to improving and growing the game, and that is very good to see. It is not everyone's cup of tea, but game companies can definatly take some lessons from someone like Blizzard. Their reputation is well earned, and they continue to live upto it.

Could be very positive. It has lots of pros but the problem is to get everyone to use it. That's not happening. If we can't even use the metric system like 99% of the world, you really think we are going to change our calender system? THe problems that would occur when changing from American to Metric would be much worse with calender.

What will really put this into a mainstream enviornment is if there are some good GUI clients available for it. If an easy to use, and perhaps more importantly, cross platform GUI client is released, you can bet that the popularity will go up. Visual Source Safe (Microsoft) isn't all that great, but people still use it because CVS doesn't have a robust windows GUI client. Or at least it didn't early on and so the first impressions were not very friendly from companies looking at products where they wouldn't have to train their employees as much. If they can come up with a great GUI right off the bat, Microsoft will really sweat.

  8. Culture on Editorial: On the SpikeTV Video Game Awards · · Score: 1, Interesting

In South Korea, video games are seen as an acceptable form of activity such as going to the movies, or hanging out with friends. Because of this, video games are much more ingrained in their culture, and you will find TV channels & televised tournaments for Starcraft and etc. You will often find a large group of friends playing together in one video game. It is seen a social activity where people meet at a central location and play games. In the US, there is a stigmata attached to playing video games. It is seen as something that either juveniles do, or something that people will 'no life' do. It is not seen as a very social thing where you and five of your friends head to some place to play games. Though that is slowly changing, games are simply not deep enough rooted as a form of entertainment for this attitude to take hold.

THis is a very good book, judging by the first few chapters. I think a lot of people new to programming don't realize how important it is to write PROPER code, which is much more important than just writing any code. I would have liked this to be more general, but defiantly a good-read for any programmer.

" Heh... Call me a troll but that's a sad statement. Especially from a slashdotter." I think a lot of people in the IT industry don't focus on aesthetics, and instead just focus on functionality. Although you want to have functionality, people are naturally attracted to good looking things. Gimp has a lot of functionality but it is ugly as hell. If it had less functionality but was better looking and provided a more 'forgiving' interface to your average user, it would be used much more widely.
