Do game developers really file I/O operations including streaming themselves? I always thought that stuff is for the OS and it's libraries. Is there a point in doing that stuff yourself? Are you saying if you develop for XBox 360, you have to code your own I/O code? And is physics engine code tied to a certain platform? Why?
Yes, they made it to cash in on the console market. But it's in Microsoft's interest to keep PC gaming alive: It's the other thing that keeps people using Windows, with Office being another.
To be fair, it's not like Microsoft beat Netscape with a superior product, but Netscape completely wasted their market share on bad business decisions.
...or you could watch the traffic directly from the gateway's (cable modem, asdl modem whatever) dump as they often have one. And I'm pretty sure the experts to that.
All media becomes unusable at some point. Most people expect DRMed stuff to last long enough for them. If it doesn't, RIAA will have a gigantic law suit handed handed to them at some point by lawyers that want to defend the poor customers. That's how the system works.
It's because you have to make sure the lab rats are in good health and without diseases etc. for the lab tests, to insure the test results are reliable.
Many of Vista's problems were not caused directly by Vista, but the fact that it enforced security more and didn't allow 3rd party software anymore to do what ever it wanted.
Now things have changed, although most software still does not grasp the idea that a person may try to install software and not be an administrator.
Yeah, but if Microsoft had not released Vista, they could not have released as good an OS as Windows 7 now. Or then Windows 7 would have had as much trouble as Vista did, because or the new driver model and other stuff.
That's a matter of perspective. You sacrificed a lot of your freedom of communication for companies that wanted to lock in their customers. Our government actually protected that freedom here.
As an another example, would you also like to give big companies rights to patent your human genes? For freedom of what? For the freedom you have to pay more money for drugs in the future? Or would you like that information to stay free and your government to back that up? Did you know you paid for most of that genome research with your tax money? And you would want to give that research information for the big companies so they would get more money out of you, instead of letting everyone have it? Just like you paid with your tax money for the GSM networks, and then let network provider companies tear the network apart with locked in subversions of GSM.
Well, thanks to government regulation European nations got unified GSM cell phone systems where you were NOT locked into a specific provider but could actually use your phone anywhere on the continent and get your call through.
Yes, the police can confiscate your stuff based on the suspicion, and if they find anything illegal there, you are screwed. It does not have to be even anything related to the original suspicion.
On a side note, downloading of copyrighted material is not illegal here. Copying a DVD you just bought to your hard drive is because you are circumventing the copy protection:)
Would you mind sharing the wifi with complete strangers, IF you could be prosecuted if the stranger makes a crime through your access point? Because that's the reality in many parts of the world.
Hasn't that been the situation since the days of MS-DOS? I remember they snubbed out competition like DR-DOS with promises of the similar features for MS-DOS "just around the corner"? Features which never happened.
Many people who are skilled in graphics creation etc. do NOT have the open source mentality: They are not "geeks" who feel pride in taking part in such projects.
Wouldn't it be a good idea to create a "open source graphics, sound and design" project in which people could contribute various objects needed in game design and graphics? Kind of like a 3D engine, but for graphics etc. only. But then there any such projects?
It takes a lot more than the engine to create a succesful game with 3D graphics. You need the story, and graphics (duh), overall design a a lot more. That's the problem with open source: It's pretty damn hard to find people to contribute to those. So you need the money anyway, not just for the engine.

How can DirectX games be hard to port between PC and XBox as they use DirectX for pretty much everything?

Does OS X support DirectX games? No? Goodbye.

I really love that fud tag with this article. I mean, where's the "fud" in the article? They say only good things about W7.
Sound like a plan :) Maybe you should consider carving the most important stuff to rock plates. Like all +5 posts :)

Well, I have a 3ghz dual core and a HD4850 gfx card, and all my DX9 games run at about 200 fps. Just sayin'.
You should probably get a faster gfx card...

The rain what now?

Actually both XP and Vista were pretty heinous before the service packs.
Well, if you have multiple people with different backgrounds contribute in a Open Source game for graphics, won't the end result look odd anyway?
Exactly, this this would be basic material, really a source from which other graphics artists could start working from.
I could do that, as long as there were Internet and beer. Wait what?
