If he wanted to start something kitchen related..... I used to manage a restaurant, you could raise the ante by going to film, no not 35mm, but cling! wrap it up dude, house, car, moped, fat girlfriend, computer what ever, for even more rub, wrap a few things in foil then in cling film. get kinky!
For what it is worth, look outside the "school district" for donations. I work in an IT department in a school with a hefty yearly budget, and a clearly defined replacement schedule for ALL equipment. We have donated all of our old and slow computers( by our standards) to other schools less fortunate. Look to the universities and colleges in the area for donations. Another route would be corperate sponsorship. Propose a pilot program, they supply the gear, you make it work, they show it off, it is a win win situation. Or you can read a few of the BOFH on the Reg, and learn how to be in control, and not controlled.
good luck
What are you crazy, I quit being a Chef and got into IT, hours were long after taxes etc, pay sucked, I'd rather turn off 50 workstations on my way out, than clean the kitchen at the end ofthe day....
IT's a crazy world....
Q & A is a good start! I work in a school as a network engineer/assist in any user issue kind of drone, and was in a classroom working on the instructors computer, while the they were having a disscussion/ Q & A about internet saftey, these were 11-12 yr olds. You should have a good knowledge of the basic internet topics, and let them ask away. Stay away from the indepth hardware topic, you will only interest the 7% geek factor, and they already know...
....
No Really,
I work for an IT department in a High School. I not only donate IT castaways(relax, dead mice and keyboards and cables only), and all of my broken electronic equipment boom boxes, hair dryers, elecrric razors...you name it our house has gone through it. Some they fix and use in the studio(i.e boom box), others they cut apart and make art.
