DeCSS is NOT copying software. We need to let people know this. It is the first step in building software to play DVD's on OS's other than Windows.

There is no encryption scheme they can build that can't be undone. Nothing is 'uncopyable'. No code is 'unbreakable'.

Q - Why bother fighting the inevitable?
A - Because the people who developed the DVD Video format lied to 'hollywood' exec's and told them no one would be able to copy their 'oh so precious' DVD movies. Now they have to try to make that lie true.

In trying to make their lies true, they are attempting to pull the wool over the eyes of the world and say they have a right to make sure no one attempts to crack their encryption scheme. For any reason! They also want to be able to collect fees from software companies that wish to make DVD software.

    Welcome to the capitalist machine.

As for their statement that DeCSS is for pirating DVD movies...

I feel that I need to throw this in as a response to all the 'end times' and y2k crap I have been spoon-fed by the media this year.

I am by no means an expert on anything, and I do not profess to be, but here's how I see things *right now*.

Now, I cannot remember where I heard this quote first, but I do know I have heard it from many different places: "Humans live their life through misery".

I think this is (unfortunately) the truest statement I have ever heard about the human race. Without something to be upset or worried about, people seem to have nothing to say.

I don't believe there is any real 'religious' relevance to the Jan 1, 2000. If our maker (whoever that may be) wants to take us all down, does he really need to pick a visually prominent date? I know if *I* were the maker, I'd do it when I felt like it :)

Combine the 'misery' with my twisted views on thought and creation, and you get one hell of an approaching mess.

People will create problems because they 'need' something to happen to confirm their beliefs. No matter how warped they may be.

What I believe is going to take place is this:

    1. People with strong religious conviction will see so-called signs of the coming apocalypse. They will believe it's the end. Some of them will act rashly and behave in a foolish manner in an attempt to redeem their souls before the 'rapture'

    2. Terrorist groups (aka religious fanatics) will bank on this assumption and wreak havoc without fear of retribution (in their minds there will be no one left to answer to). They will kill many innocent people.

    3. Microsoft will release an 'across-the-board' patch on December 29, 1999 for all windows platforms to screw up y2k compliance so you have to buy win2000 immediately (I AM JOKING HERE [If I am right though, I will laugh forever])

    4. People who have no real religious beliefs will laugh at all the fools jumping off buildings in fear of the coming rapture.

    5. Someone will react rashly to a terrorist strike and cause wholesale damage. They will kill many innocent people.

    6. Someone will have computer problems. They will panic. They will forget the fact that if they turn the system off, then back on followed by resetting the date and time they will be okay.

    7. Riots, LARGE riots. That's what happens when there is tension and anxiety in a large group of people. We all know where they will start. Where will there be large gatherings? Just watch.

    8. I will sit home with my family and friends. Drink. Laugh. Then after we are all sloshed, we will play twister. I will wake up the next morning, turn on my PC, then read Slashdot. Life will go on.

If you are naive enough to believe there won't be any problems due to the coming new year, I pity you.

I don't think you need to build a bomb shelter. Just make sure you have a baseball bat or some such thing by your front door for when the zealots come a-knocking.

You could uninstall windows too... just to be safe ;)

  18. I wanna be an American. on Linux Use in China - a View From Beijing · · Score: 3

The young man from China posted an excellent article about Linux and it's uses in his country. I applaud his efforts. I am glad to have heard his voice. I have never heard a oice from China before :)

The thing I do not understand is this:
Where do the agressive people get the right to slag him for living in China. Do these people know anything about China other than what propagana has been spoon-fed to them? Somehow I doubt it.

Since I moved to NY from Moncton, NB, Canada, I have seen this kind of ignorance and fear from many of the people I have met. I see it in many things that are done in this country. I thought this was supposed to be the 'home of the brave', I guess I was wrong. As opposed to sticking their necks out and learning something, many people would rather sit cowering in fear and point their fingers, jeering "Red Commie Bastard". Wow, that's brave. :)

The people talking about all of the bad things China has done in human rights. Do they know? Were they there? I doubt it. Here's the reason for my doubt:

Most of the people I have met here think Canada is a small insignificant country north of them somewhere. It has 2 or 3 major cities: Toronto, Montreal and some of them have heard of Vancouver.(note: there are professional BIG LEAGUE sports teams in these cities and they are therefore televised a lot.) I have had people from this country ask me if I see the sun in the winter! I explain to them that I lived just north-east of Maine and they still think that there's NO SUN for the winter months there. Yet there is in Maine. I guess the sun stops at the american border just like rational thought and good government. ;)

    Unbelievable.

If these people are so un-informed about a country that borders them to the north... How could they have _ANY_ grasp of what occurs in China?

They know what they have been told by the media for the most part. Not much more.

From my studies in school I found China to be a 'mysterious' country filled with some beautiful art, music and an interesting history. It's probably over-crowded and I am sure there is a lot of poverty. But I don't hate them for it. They have a completely different set of beliefs than I and their system of government is so vastly different from mine that I cannot fathom how it would operate. So what? I _REFUSE_ to subscribe to the propaganda jammed down my throat about 'commies' and 'reds' from american television throughout the late 70's and 80's. I really don't think anyone who lives in a country who's leader is a manipulative 'playboy' has any right to go on about matters of good government. I will not hate these people until I know them myself and find reasons of my own. I don't believe that communism is any worse than 'American capitalism'.

Some people don't have the presence of mind to believe there's more than one way to live.

I hate to generalize and I hate stereotypes. These are just the things I have seen.

Many thanks to Slashdot for trying to bring stories like these to view. It's an excellen idea hosted by some very fine and humourous folks :)

Onward and forward with the free software movement! I hope it opens more eyes and gives me more opportunities to see and learn about my foreign planet-mates :)
