  1. Would the Physicists Please Stand Up on New Class of Pulsars Discovered · · Score: 1

Assuming a Neutron star is actually solely made up of Neutrons ... how does it emit electromagnetic radiation when there's no charged particles? Is it just the minute amount of charged particles that reside that emit the radiation, or is it perhaps charged particles around the star, orbiting violently that emit?

  2. Re:Jack Layton on Canadian NDP Leader Praises P2P Communities · · Score: 1

The problem with Layton is his stance on the welfare state: I'm all for free health care, higher taxes for the rich, social safety nets - but his policies punish people who work and earn their achievements. He would limit education scholarships and make them taxable and simultaneously dump more money into disabilities and unemployment welfare. I think people should have a safety net if they become incapacitated but it needs to be genuine. I know quite a few people on disability, and they deserve nothing they're receiving - they're merely discomforted like many people who work despite their problems. The canadian government can save a bundle if they cut off these lazy sacs. As a final example, if you go on disability and doctors determine that an operation can fix the problem, you have the right to avoid the (free) operation AND stay on disability. That is an enormous crock of shit.

If they are verbal. I love an interview that asks me "what would you do in this situation" or "how you you best describe x" or "give me the most efficient design to achieve y". Such situations test a persons' instincts. To test someone's ability to code in an interview is ridiculous beyond measure - the same person who would fail the test, would otherwise innovate the hell out of anyone else in practice.

I think the question it would raise (not that it isn't already the case) is why we need God if all life can be explained via evolution AND abiogenesis ? Evolution is a forgone conclusion (what with the mountains of evidence) but abiogenesis is still in hypothesis stage (mind you, far more plausible than God). With experiments like this, you continue to pile on empirical evidence for abiogenesis until it becomes a solid theory like Gravity and Evolution. After which we're still left with explaining the existence of the universe, which might need no answer if we're one of infinite universes, or one cycle of an infinite number of big-bang / big-crunch cycles.

I think it's clear you're a Tesla fanatic who probably knows very little about electromagnetics. If you had ANY knowledge at all, you would mention Maxwell long before you'd mention Tesla. Hell, if it comes down to emag, we have far more owed to Faraday and Hertz, not to mention Heaviside and Poynting than Tesla. Without the big five, applied electromagnetics (my research field) would be nothing of what it is. Tesla was one of the greats, but in no way does he stand shoulder to shoulder with, for example, Maxwell. Ask any single physicist or engineer dealing electromagnetics, and they will immediately say Maxwell was the greatest scientist of all time, bar none. Einstein bowed down to Maxwell's contributions. That's saying something.

This PC garbage gets tiresome. So terms like Dame, Chick, Lady, etc.. are somehow derogatory? What if the person was a man, and the author used "chap" or "gent" or what have you. I think it's good that the author pointed out the person is a woman, as it points out women can just as easily get into engineering - the point is to start them off right like her parents did at age 10. I think this person is a very smart chick, a brilliant lady and a classy dame. I'm guessing you're either married to a feminist, or you're single and this is your attempt at making yourself more desirable to chicks.

Getting an antenna off the ground is for the cases where the transmitter is not LOS (due to Earth curvature) or large obstacles such as buildings. The parent is 100% correct if you cant see any towers from your window due to distance, or large buildings in the way. Some drywall, fiberglass, windows, etc.. will not prevent you from receiving a signal. However, bulky metal railings on a balcony sure as hell will (as in my case).

If you can see any towers, I really recommend building your own Helix antenna. I'm not sure about the HDTV frequencies, but I recall hearing UHF: 400 - 800 MHz, so a 600 MHz helix might do the trick. At 600 MHz you're looking at a helix circumference of around 0.5m, or a diameter of 15.9cm. It's bulky, but the nice thing about helices is they're aesthetically pleasing (at least to geeks).
