I think it has changed in Windows 8, at least regarding English language pack. The Language pack download page says you can get the English pack on any language/edition of Win8. In Win7 it is restricted to Ultimate and Enterprise editions.
As I understand it, the miners also get a tiny fee for processed transactions. So maybe you'd walk the streets looking for loot if you got paid x amount every ten meters.
I just finished applying the update, and the first thing I noticed is that now the icons on my start screen have different background colors. In Win8 they were all blue. Now in 8.1 some are blue, some are green, many are gray, and a couple are even bright orange.
If this is how it looked for others in Win8 then I fully understand what they meant about "garbled mess of icons". I wonder if there's a way to get it back to the calm blue. I have no problem with the "menu" being full screen, but this is a bit too much.
Oh btw, these are desktop application icons, I'm still looking for a useful Metro app...
Sounds a bit paranoid, quite honestly. I'm one of the saddest no-lifers I know and even I wouldn't waste my time on something like that. Wouldn't that also take a huge amount of accounts to pull off reliably, given that mod points are distributed randomly?
Very often when I read a post claiming that sock-puppets have modded down their parent post, the said parent is at +3 or higher.
I don't know how I'm comfortable with it either, but after using Windows 8 for half a year I am (not saying it necessarily takes six months to get comfortable, I just don't remember whether I was comfortable with it from the start (no pun intended) or not).
Both the start menu and start screen grab my attention, which is expected since I pressed winkey to bring them up in order to use them. Win+I and enter gives direct access to control panel. Harshly coloured jumbled mess is a bit of an exaggeration IMHO, all the icons on my start screen have a calm blue background.
I still haven't found any useful Metro apps though. I have tried Metro Skype every now and then, but it's very limited compared to the desktop version.
Nice to see another member of the shrinking minority. I bought a 99 euro dumbphone three years ago (previous phone got a lesson in gravity) and I doubt I'll replace it until it breaks. It handles calls and texting fine, and is adequate for looking stuff up on the web. And it has physical buttons which I find a lot more usable than a touchscreen.
I did buy a cheap tablet couple of months ago just to find out what the craze is about. It has been gathering dust for a few weeks now, because to be useful it needs a keyboard and a proper monitor connected to it, at which point I might as well use my desktop PC.
I don't doubt that tablets are useful to many people, but presently I'm not one of them.
Even 2-3 minutes sounds very long, at least in Finland according to this page: 112 in Finland.
If I am unable to tell the 112 operator where I am, will the emergency services be able to locate me? If so, how quickly?
* Yes, immediately for mobile calls and from 2 to 10 seconds for fixed calls.
I said his name five times fast, nothing happened. Should I do it in front of a mirror?

It's profitable, but not as profitable as you think. One thousand Core i7 3930k CPUs mining (66 GH/s) nets around 40 euros per day (at 835â/BTC).
The number of installs is probably much higher than 1k, but on the other hand most CPUs won't be as fast as a 3930k and won't be running 24/7.

It's 2.5mm actually, which explains why I never noticed it either. I thought 3.5mm was as small as they came.

Go right through Falken's Maze?
It's actually a relevant picture. Strange...
