I didn't want (or mean) to take anything away from the abilities of artists who have worked with GIMP. However, there's a world of difference between a wallpaper, and the quality (and amount) of art required for a AAA title.

Tux Racer is probably the most high-profile open source title out there. As fun as it is, it simply doesn't compare graphics-wise to any commercial title. If Tux Racer can't draw the talent, what chance does dozens or hundreds of titles for this spurious new console?

All the GPL'd game code in the world isn't going to mean squat if you can't get artists and musicians. If AAA-game quality people can be convinced that working without payment is a Good Thing, then right on. Personally, I don't see it happening. I can imagine the conversation now.

Wannabe Game Developer: So you see, you should spend months creating content for my l33t game. It'll have lens flares and stuff.
    Artist: Okay, lets talk rates.
Wannabe Game Developer: Oh, it's open source. You don't get paid, but people can take your art and use it in their games. Cool, eh?
    Artist: Riiight...

I don't mean for this to sound like a troll, but AFAIK nobody is making "fat profits" from open source (with the possible exception of spindoctor firms sucking away investment dollars). Companies who focus on open source technologies don't seem to be doing well at all.

A few years ago I was working for a software subsidiary of a major manufacturer of electronic learning aids (computers for kids aged 10 and under). This company decided they wanted to break into games and multimedia.

So me and another developer are transferred from Australia to Hong Kong. Over our objections, a lot of asset development is outsourced to China and India. Things did not go well.

Everything we received from the teams in China and India were consistently of such poor quality, much of it had to be redone locally. A collossal waste of time and money.

For outsourcing to work, you must have talented groups and exceptional communication between them. Too often, unfortunately, Bean Counters are unable to get a grasp on those basic concepts.
