  1. They aren't so bad... on Whippersnappers Bad-Mouth Old Games · · Score: 2, Insightful

Really, these kids aren't bad. They may put down the old games, but at least they are witty about it. The real brats are the ones who would just call the classics "gay" and want nothing to do with them. These kids at least have taste (they like Wind Waker, that's a good sign). I've met punks older than these kids who didn't know what Half-Life was, who never played Mario, Zelda, or Mega Man but still insisted that Halo is the best game ever made and everything else is "for fags".

Ikaruga for the GameCube is comparable to those old shoot-em-up classics, I think. It's really hard.

  3. $2.6 million? on Diebold to Pay $2.6M Due to Insecure Voting Machines · · Score: 1

And to think, it costs far less to rig an election (or, if one were to assume Diebold were acting out of incompetence instead of malice, to run an election so poorly that the votes don't matter) than to actually run a campaign.

  4. Legend of Zelda? on Nintendo Eyeing the Big Screen · · Score: 1

I know that many posters will say that video game-based movies are bad, and for the most part they're right (well, I didn't think Mortal Kombat was so bad :)), I have high hopes for a good Legend of Zelda movie. Nintendo are coming out with a new LoZ game in 2005, so the first film might be a decent tie-in. And don't forget that John Woo was named as the director of a Metroid movie. That shouldn't be too terrible.

  5. Great on Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow · · Score: 3, Insightful

He imagined that Spielberg and Lucas might soon be having a similar conversation somewhere in California. I have to agree that it seems like a distinct possibility. Wonderful. We'll have another director who relies solely on CG to sell his films, without any real focus on plot, dialogue, or acting, just like Lucas does these days. I don't think that this is a good trend; it makes for bad movies and deligitimizes CG technology, so that directors who actually use it well (like Peter Jackson in LOTR) don't get the recognition they deserve.

  6. Re:Make yourself worth your pay? on Paul Samuelson Challenges Outsourcing · · Score: 1

The problem is, most companies wouldn't even care if you trained yourself to be the best programmer in the world because they see programmers as a commodity. They won't perceive your skills so long as they can hire 3 programmers for your salary in India. It seems the only way to remain employed in the US IT industry these days is to be a senior programmer, which means that you would have had to work your way up before the outsourcing rush.

  7. Re:Michael Moore on Michael Moore Seeks TV Airing of Fahrenheit 9/11 · · Score: 1

Oh, please. Right-wing commentators are far more viscious than almost everyone on the left, and they get more exposure too. Dennis Hastert recently said that Democratic contributor George Soros acquired his fortune through narcotics, Anne Coulter called liberals traitors, Jerry Falwell blamed 9/11 on gays and lesbians, and you're saying that people like Michael Moore are spouting "weird crap"? The right has been like this for years, too; during the 1988 elections, the Bush camp spread rumors that Dukakis's wife burned the flag, etc. It's true that the left can say some pretty outrageous things, but they're not nearly as bad as right-wing attackers.

  8. Re:Dumb The Vote on Michael Moore Seeks TV Airing of Fahrenheit 9/11 · · Score: 1

Elections in America have almost always been little more than schoolyard brawls between two candidates; even in the 1800's, political opponents were resorting to bitter ad hominem attacks and soundbites to manipulate the people. Federalists claimed that Jefferson had illegitimate children, the 1828 election was little more than a popularity contest between Jackson and Adams, Lincoln's opponents critiqued (sp?) his physical characteristics, etc. Granted, the growth of the media with television, the internet, etc has amplified the noise, but little has changed since the birth of the republic.

  9. Re:accuracy in reporting on Slashdot Goes Political: Announcing politics.slashdot.org · · Score: 1

That's not completely accurate; I've noticed that a good number of /. readers are very libertarian. They may be "socially liberal" (pro-gay marriage, abortion rights, etc), but that's just out of a desire to see less government intervention in people's lives. For the most part, people here dislike large governments.

  10. /. Icon on Both Tea And No Tea - Updated Hitchhiker's Game · · Score: 2

With all the new HHGTG stuff coming out over the next year (new radio play, movie, etc.), I think Slashdot should make a HHGTG icon. After all, LOTR got an icon when the movies were released. The original mascot (spherical green alien with its tongue sticking out, giving a thumbs up) would fit nicely.

  11. Graphical Adventure on Both Tea And No Tea - Updated Hitchhiker's Game · · Score: 1

I would like to see an updated point-and-click version of the text adventure game, in the style of the Monkey Island games. I think they did this for Starship Titanic, and it would be great to see them make one in time for the HHGTG movie. (Oh, and a tip for the text game: relieve the headache by taking the analgesic found in the pocket of the dressing gown.)
