Joking aside -- Yeah, pretty much. I can't stand Java. C is my favorite language, closely followed by C++... because they both *run*. Java is mind-bogglingly slow, considering it is *based* on the speedy C.

I'm not entirely sure that they won't. They definitely have the bandwidth, the storage capacity, and most of the software already on hand, and they seem to be releasing a lot of new services lately. At any rate, watch Google Labs...
I agree very much. I think a first step would be to at least decrease the amount of Java it uses. I realize this would make some other things a little more difficult (ie. cross-platform compatibility), but if it was written entirely in C++, it would be much faster. I expect a few replies telling me why this isn't feasible/possible, and I probably won't dispute them, but Java is bad.
About eliminating features, I don't think this is a possibility. To remain competitive with MS Office, they need to keep all these features that MS has but nobody really uses.
Somebody had their crazy flakes this morning. It doesn't matter if the kernel is identical... How many installations have you seen (with X) that don't have Xine *or* Totem *or* one of the other 800 compatible players? They're pretty common apps. Hell, I had both of those and I didn't even realize:)

Actually, I'm not sure. My connection is certainly capable of at least 200, but I'm only getting 60-something with bittorrent 4.0. I guess it's *possible* that azureus is better, although I find this unlikely.
Yeah, now I'm getting 62 down. It was just the first ten minutes or so where I didn't get anything. I guess it handled the sudden rush better than I would have predicted.:)
Huh? There's a direct link to the torrent in the article. At least, it worked for me. I wouldn't bother for a day or two, though. This torrent is officially slashdotted... My download rate at one point reached a maximum of 0KB/s

I agree with what you say. If anyone has studied hypnosis/etc., they should know that the subconcious mind has some strange abilities. It seems likely to me that non-savants use their concious minds for calculations, while savants are somehow able to use their subconcious mind to do this.
I'm no rocket surgeon, but could the brain damage have affected the portion of the concious mind which normally would control arithmetical operations, somehow causing the subconcious mind to take over, as you say, as a survival technique?
I'm just talking out of my @$$ here, but it makes sense now... I probably won't think so in another 15 minutes. lol.
Ideally, don't avoid white -- just don't make your whole fricking page white. Take a look at textfiles.com. _THAT'S_ what happens when you avoid white. AAAHH!!! My Eyes!!! Now look at slashdot. _THAT'S_ what happens when you love white just a little too much. (j/k)
I agree that CSS will save your life. Also, try the PHP include() feature. With a combination of the two, code for individual pages can essentially be kept to plain text/content. Feel the power.
I thought Ffox was supposed to fight _AGAINST_ proprietarization. Seriously, if someone is smart enough to get Ffox, they are smart enough to see that they are viewing a page on an international TLD. But then again, they are probably smart enough to disable this *feature* as well. Hmm...

I'm all for open-source software... I use Firefox, Thunderbird, and OpenOffice.org religiously, but seriously, what IS the big deal with this calendar? I haven't looked too hard, but I imagine there would be tons of free calendar apps similar to this one. I'm not saying this isn't a good program -- it is. I just don't think it's tha big of a deal.

I agree. This is similar to TiVo. As soon as something becomes a verb, its sticking around. The sheep will inevitably hear "Google it" and assume that Google is the only Search Engine for the job, or sometimes even think it is the only search engine. Conversely, most of these sheep have Hotmail accounts, from which Microsoft seems to do a fair amount of self-promotion.
I think Google will win out, but Microsoft has a chance will the less computer-literate. Only time will tell, I suppose.
