I love both languages and see their pro's and con's. Though I'm a little confused over this post.
It's to create a framework of sorts for creating parallelized code right? I love PHP, but despite the myriad of bindings for it, it's still something you code in a script that executes on the fly via Apache right? Or more specifically, you can't do this from
$bash>php myscript.php
and run an application. If so then how can you fit running parallized (albeit computation heavy) applications via Apache or any httpd?
Have a script call another script on a different node running apache?
I've been using Camino since it changed names, and a while back I ran out of HD space and when I shut my OS X machine down, I lost everything in Camino. I eventually tried deleting/uninstalling it from my system, but there seems to be a.plist or hidden config file somewhere that is used for configuring bookmarks, etc.
I have since changed over to Firefox (still haven't tried 1.0) but I've never had problems with it on my OS X machine.
I agree. That Geiko Gecko is pretty cool;) and how many people have you seen that joked about the "Bud-weis-er" frogs. I've even seen shirts with them.
What's the difference between NextStep and OpenStep?
From what I've read they are both different operating systems.. so are they by different companies are both done by NeXT? If so what did OpenStep run on? What where the goals of the diff OS's?
I've been searching for Rhapsody DR2 prob for 8-9 years.. Remember a friend of mine received it *think* when he bought Codewarrior for Mac. Or something along those lines..
Is it considered Abandonware (kinda?) I know it never really went on sell, but was distributed to developers.
Anyway I'm looking for a copy if you can help.
lol I never thought to check ebay, hrm.. would be wonderful if it was on sale via ebay
Anyway congrats:)

Guessing it would still be pronounced Diskette even though it's spelled discette.. since you dont called CD's compact dis's but rather like disks the C still sounds like a K.
Reason I ask, is that when it comes to companies who literally collect a couple TB of data a day... tapes still seem to be used.
If you can just burn 3-4 of these UB discs, I think it would be a lot nicer/perhaps quicker/more reliable. Guess on the flip side at least with tapes you can RW them. *shrug*
That doesn't sound bad at all. I went to a seminar at the Pittsburgh Supercomputing center a couple years ago. (First time I ever saw a Cray *sigh*) hehe..
Anyway one of the guys there told me they had an older cray model just sitting in storage because it cost to much to use Over $1million a month for power and the cost of the coolant Cray's used. My memory might be off, but that makes the VT cluster even cheaper with respect to power consumption. Also no specially needed coolant other than an AC.
I think it should be opened to people who *want* to go to college but need the $$ first. I'm sitting out of college now, (over a year) because I can't afford it and the best job I can find around here is $5.15.
Not trolling, but if it's a scholarship, they should make it a rule that rewards are for now or future college use.
Understand what you mean. Where I use to go to school they had hours of operation for their library system. Originally a vt3270 system, then web based. But still, why close at midnight, when some of us students stay up passed that time to study and need to look up things. If it runs 24/7 then why not be able to use it.
To me this seems like the same problem HD's have, trying to cram more density in less space.
Personally I wouldn't mind a computer that was the size of a small refrigerator if I knew it could pump out 1THZ and did a good job at power consumption.
BTW I do a lot of computation hungry coding, so speed is important.
at least for getting GPS data. Last year I wrote a small serial utility to capture GPS data in linux and only took a couple hours. (requires a GPS unit that sends via RS232, no idea about USB though).
The big question would be support for using GPS data.. like plotting a path on a real map.. but that shoulndn't be hard either given terraserver or the myriad of GIS data out there for free.
Off Topic, but/. is being used to harvest email accounts for spam.
In almost 6 or so months I've been gmail I've never had a real Spam.. till last week when I *stupidly* wrote my gmail account here.
I somewhat disagree.. I think the myth that Mac's aren't easily upgradable went away when Apple began to use PCI/AGP components..
Even on my dual Mac I have ram I bought at Office Depot, and can plug in a AGP video card easily.
USB and Firewire devices aren't a problem at all.. I have *oddly* several "retailed for Wintel only" devices on my Mac all working nicely..
lol I'm even typing this via an PS/2 Win keyboard using a PS/2 doggle... no drivers needed just works.. and even the win key automaps as the apple key.
I was a Linux user from 1996 till 2001 or so when OS X came out, and after seeing it, fell in love.
It's like having Linux w/ all of the OSS software + a nice GUI that works perfectly.
Anyway..
I haven't tried Darwin x86 (via Virtual PC yet)
But wouldn't the lack of core programs be rememdied by Fink?
Curious if Fink would work on a strict Darwin system.
If any fink ppl know email me jshriver gmail dot com

Just food for thought.

Anyway, noticed on the box that came with my machine that OS X is partially FreeBSD and/or OpenBSD based...
So how does this related to NextStep?

:) I remember when the first CD drives came out they had tray loaded cases like a floppy.. could this count as a discette? :)

Anyone know if we'll ever see a Quad G5 in a Mac? Probably an Xserve, but even an IBM workstation using a quad G5 would be nice. Comments?

Actually OS X does have X11 as a free download. I've been using it for years and use a lot of OSS apps via X.
Thank you ver much.
Curious but where is the mp3 stream for NPR? I've been searching and best I can find is .rm and .wmp
