  1. Re:Typical Slashdot Gripes for this Item on Samsung Announces Flash-Based Disk Drive · · Score: 1

Surely for MythTV you wouldn't need a lot of writes to the same sector of flash memory? I personally would be recording once and probably watching many, many times before recording over that same sector of the flash drive. Though I do admit they need to be much bigger and faster to handle things such as recording while watching something else.

Yes you missed the bit where Intel produced the best mobile CPU yet, with low power requirements and decent performance over AMD offerings. I'll admit AMD are doing very well in the desktop market just now, but Intel has the laptop processor market for the moment. There have even been tests where the Dothan CPUs were fitted into desktops and overclocked. They perform extremely well in comparison to any normal processor out there- and at lower wattages too.

Wouldn't you want a diamond which is opaque to ultra-violet to use as a lense in your sunglasses?

The reason they have the UV protection on sunglasses is your pupils are wider with them on, and thus more UV light can get in to damage your sight.

Do you have an automatic gearbox? they're known for being vastly more inefficient than a manual one, for which that tip was originally given I think.

And I believe in my thermodynamics course there was something about slow changes being recoverable therefore more efficient, but applying that to a car engine at 2-3000 rpm is a bit silly...

  6. Re:it's about cooling on Any Recourse for Failed Drives? · · Score: 1

Various things about the cold could cause premature failure- expansion/contraction of bearings and moving parts. Viscosity increases as temperature decreases causing the motor to work harder. Increased friction. But I personally can't see these affecting anything much, especially on such a small scale the changes are negligible...

Pound notes in the UK have not been produced for quite a while. The last bank to produce them was I believe the Royal Bank of Scotland and since a couple of years ago even they no longer produce them. The Pound note is becoming something of a rarity now, I haven't seen one in over two years (Scottish and proud).
