I was like that and now my son is like that (tuned out of class, far ahead of our peers in knowledge and understanding). I gave him some college level tests and he actually did better than me on one of them. Needless to say, he passed all of them. I can NOT get my son accelerated. They just want to fail him and hold him back because he has completely tuned out because of how painfully repetitive and stupid it all is. I have tried turning it into a self-discipline game that is super easy for him to win but the damage was done by the 4th grade. Any mention of the word "school" and he completely shuts off.
It has taken some time, but I have turned his mind back on. He finally has a sense of wonder about the world again and I can even get him to do research on his questions and ideas... but, I have to be extremely careful because if he thinks I am trying to "teach" him anything, he shuts down immediately.
Yeah, I have some extreme anger towards a system that has made life extremely painful for both my son and myself. My son has that same anger and all I can do is teach him to put it off long enough to where he dies before it causes any problems.
To all of the fantastic teachers (professional or not!) out there: You folks are magical and deeply loved and appreciated. You have had an incredible and deep impact on my life that I will never forget. You are as gods. When you die, may angels lift you softly up into heaven where you are given a place of honor for all of eternity.
To all of the bad teachers and school administrators out there: Fuck you! You are amongst the most evil bastards out there. You steal imagination and hope from children so that their tears of frustration grant meaning to your pitiful and worthless existence. I hope that your deaths are are prolonged and extremely painful and that demons shackle you and drag you down to hell while you are kicking and screaming in terror.
Meh. How can I help my son not turn out like myself?
(um... CAPTCHA is catalyst. Bizarre. Oh, and I apologize for the stream of consciousness rambling.)
You actually kind of are. Why do NONE of the "cloud" providers ensure that there is no way they can look at your data? Oh sure, they will say the servers are tightly controlled and heavily monitored and there is no way an employee could get at your data, etc etc yadda yada yadda, but none offer to have your data encrypted BEFORE they have control of it. D'oh! Automatic fail.
I know you were just being sarcastic, but amazingly, you nailed it... however, you forgot something (which is really the benefit that cloud computing could bring us). All of that cloud computing taking place on your desk gets automatically replicated to a remote (under the same company's control) server.
"Cloud computing", in its current incarnation, is only attractive to Law Enforcement Agencies and the businesses who actually run "cloud" services. There are no actual guarantees of keeping business data private from other businesses. No, a signed piece of paper stating, "No Guv'nor, our employees are guaranteed not to be able to sell your data and run off to a desert island with his/her new riches.", is not good enough. If the servers will be under another person's control then the key used to encrypt all of it needs to be under the information owner's control. That, and the inevitable downtime, are the reason cloud services will never take off for smart businesses.
Creepily, the CAPTCHA is "unknowns". Cue (queue?) the Twilight Zone music.
"By that logic, email existed before the telephone. They just called it a "telegram.""
Not true. A telegram is transmitted electronically (electrically?) but it is stored purely in a physical format; e.g. paper. This makes ineligible to be covered under the expansive logic you are decrying.:)
What is even more frustrating is that if CO2 is found not to be THE major factor in Global Warming then that becomes an argument to stop worrying about CO2 emissions since they "do not significantly contribute to Global Warming."
I am of the opinion that changing the chemical composition of the atmosphere is a REALLY bad idea right now. Perhaps when we have solved our social problems, bottled air would be acceptable. Perhaps when we can survive indefinitely in space, killing all aerobic life is acceptable. I am not saying that these things are likely in the near future. I do think these things can happen eventually.
You and your family don't have to ever change your lifestyle or even think about the devastating environmental, financial, or human rights effects of said lifestyle.
Hm. A vehicle is a very common polluting thing a person/family has. I am seeing no solutions to the transportation problem so personal vehicles kind of have to stay regardless of any damage. Drive less?
Homes. Homes use lots of electricity. Server racks, grow farms, air conditioning, etc. I suppose being exposed to a wide variety of temps will not kill most folks even if it is uncomfortable. Run fewer servers?
The majority of polluting is outside of any individual's control. It is the source of the electricity and the source of the motive power that are changing the makeup of our atmosphere. Both problems can be solved if "we" generated electricity in a manner that does not spew chemicals into the atmosphere.
There are a few technologies that do provide such benefits: Solar, Wind (another form of solar), geothermal, and nuclear. It seems pretty clear that nuclear will have to be one of the technologies because of how much energy is needed to power human endeavours.
Even better, go to a country that DOES filter porn (and other things immoral) and do a google image search for porn. I have done so (Kuwait). Yes, there were quite a few blocked images but there were still thousands upon thousands of blatant porn images still displayed. The only search that shows absolutely NOTHING, even in countries without filtering/blocking, is kiddie porn (why is my door getting smashed in?) **NO CARRIER**
There is NO threat from criminals that want to commit mass murder by hijacking planes.
Hm. Stop breathing through your mouth. Of course there is a threat. Just as there is a threat of AK47s in malls. Some people are just that pissed off.
I agree to an extent though. The threat is blown WAAAAAAAYYYYY out of proportion. Really? The threat is so bad that I can't have a bottle of water with me? I have to take off my shoes? WTF? Meh. Once the concept of safety is invoked, people seem to lose their minds... as if they will live forever unchanged through time so that NOTHING must ever happen.
OMG! I just thought of something: What happens when humans achieve victory over old age? The rules will be so crazy that a majority will end up killing themselves because it is intolerable. The rest won't be able to feed themselves because it is too dangerous to actually DO anything. UV causes cancer. Who would risk shortening their life by exposing themselves to the sun? Full body suits. Will they be air conditioned? Well, growing season is in the summer. Move all farming indoors? ROFL. Do you know how much energy that would require?! Possible? Expensive? I am sure some sci-fi author has already written a good story about this but I can not think of one right now.
Yes, and we had some kind of security measures for decades before 9/11. Let's go back to that.
I am not sure why everyone thinks that the new and/or old security measures were ever very effective. Sure, it mostly stopped Joe Schmoe from bringing his guns and knives on board, but it did NOT stop organized criminals from having all sorts of illegal stuff on board.
Yes, there should be some mild (metal detector) security at the front door. The back door is where all the "fun" is at. How much has TSA improved security at the back door? If a lot, should they be dismantled because of their theater tactics at the front door?
High Speed Rail? Where? There are no high speed rails within a thousand (yes, literally!) miles (1,600km) of me in any direction. I live in Colorado. I eagerly await the list of rails that I must have missed.
Low speed rail? Sure. Lots of coal and such passing by. It does not look comfortable to ride in/on though. I guess boxcars are not too bad. Hobos use them a lot. I hear it is illegal though.
Honestly though, I am shocked you would suggest rail at all if you lived anywhere in America. Sure, there are a few very small areas served, but really, it is virtually non-existant in the scale of things.
Hm. I am not sure there are any cities, other than Chicago, west of New York and east of Los Angeles (the entire USA part of the continent) that even have an El or Subway.
See, that's the problem. Russian missiles are set to travel over the North Pole, not over Europe. This system would only defend against missiles targeting Europe, and even then its debatable.
I resisted commenting in this article but you kind of forced me to.;)
Anti-ballistic missiles are most effective when intercepting ICBMs on liftoff. Surrounding Russia with an ABM system would cripple Russia's missile launching regardless of intended direction of flight.
Honestly, I am shocked at the military intentions in Eastern Europe by America. The only legitimate reason for such a system is to make an invasion "easier". I understand that eventually, America wants to take over the world. No problem. Should America be doing such things NOW though?
If the system is to be used for what it is claimed it will be used for, then America should not do it. It costs way too much and provides no substantial benefit.
Lets examine this real fast: You (I am assuming) do not believe that religions have any merit. Presumably, you have some reasons or rationale for why you arrived at that conclusion. That is, you have a belief, because you had at some point (I hope) done some critical thinking, and your chain of reasoning resulted in a belief.
No no no. You misunderstand (or merely just mis-state). The statement, "You (I am assuming) do not believe that religions have any merit.", is not logically followed by this, " That is, you have a belief, because you had at some point (I hope) done some critical thinking, and your chain of reasoning resulted in a belief."
A lack of belief is not a belief. It is NULL. It is not that "your" god is being excluded, it is that "your" god is not believed in.
For example, I have never heard anyone describe how they approach religion/belief/etc in a manner that is anything like my own approach. Anyways... long story short, I do not believe in your god. I do not claim that your god does not exist. Your god may very well exist and the universe may very well be as you were taught it is.
It requires an act of faith, yes literally, to believe in your god. That is a positive action.
It requires nothing to not believe in your god. This is a neutral action.
It requires an act of faith, again literally, to believe that your god does not exist. This is a positive (negative?) action.
Is it clear now? You are claiming an action on the part of the non-believers. Some non-believers will deny your god and at that point, your two statements that I quoted are valid, but not all non-believers deny your god... they just fail to believe in "him".
Really, 9 times out of 10 now I instantly discount anyone that brings race as either a flamebaiter or someone that uses it as a crutch for their own short comings.
I like your statement. Here is why: If racism were as common or as institutionalized as it was earlier in this nation's history, say 1950s, then 9 times out of 10, you would not be discounting claims of racism so casually.
Not a perfect state of affairs but certainly an improvement.:) Go go gadget rational thought processes.
Alas, most people do not have the intelligence to appreciate the benefits that quality brings. It depresses me when people ask me if the stars are above the clouds or what Venus is. Yes, I have really been asked lots of questions like that.
I tend to assume people are more intelligent than they are and it is a real eye opener when I find out the depth of ignorance that surround me... and I do not even consider myself terribly intelligent.
What nonsense. There are a whole host of Windows x86 tablets coming with full touch support and with new form factors which will be fully compatible with existing software and enterprise features of PCs.
You are right that his post was nonsense... however, you seem to think a Microsoft tablet will gain any traction at all. It will not. Here is why:
Microsoft can not seem to write good software. Yes, there are some elements of quality in their software so you rarely get weird crap like fonts running outside of their areas (unless you use a different DPI). Their software (except possibly Windows Explorer) is generally very very crappy to use. The end user experience is terrible. It seems that the people in charge of designing the software never ever actually use it and rely on "studies" and such to dictate how the software should be.
Windows Mobile was crappy and very buggy. Most people (including me and I know better) will assume the experience will be just as horrifying as Windows Mobile. Dropped calls, surprise reboots, etc. Meh.
Releasing it without a full feature set? Just wow. Fuck off. Stop bothering me with this crap until it is ready and has the features that are needed.
Read my first point again. They are going up against an iPad and Android based tablets. Their attitude of "it is good enough. we can shove it down their throats now" is never going to work. They have absolutely no muscle in this area.
Ultimately, the leadership (not just Ballmer) is really really fucked up. Nobody who is capable of being clueful can do anything. Their constant revenue stream prevents any chance of a clued person ever being able to do anything.
Personal reason I will not be buying the tablet: I avoid corps like Microsoft and Sony. Call it a permanent boycott.

Hm. I am unsure how you came up with some of those numbers but I suspects the odds will change a LOT if everyone made the same choices you are.
The odds are that low now because most people are vaccinating their children. Your choices are directly increasing the risk of disease for your child and all of the other children out there. I really think you should reexamine your thinking and calculation of odds concerning vaccination.
Wifi drops every 15 minutes or less and has been for YEARS. I have found posts about this problem from back in 2007! Renewing the DHCP lease causes something to happen to restore the connection but it is VERY frustrating since NONE of the work-arounds work and Apple refuses to acknowledge the problem. For myself, the problem did not kick in until Tiger. I refuse to "upgrade" to Lion since it does not even fix that problem.
Since I know other people with Macs, I know it is not just something messed up with my computer. I can witness the behavior clearly on their computers too. If you do not have that problem, consider yourself lucky. No more Apple products for me if they are willing to let that bug stand for so long.
It is worse than that. I am far far far more afraid of being viewed as a potential spy (I am not of course) and losing my ability to work or even possibly being set up and thrown in jail just to get rid of the potential undesirables.

I wonder how much worse it will get before it gets better? I would really like to feel safe when I see a policeman or government agent. As it is, I feel fear every time.
I think that you have correctly identified the level of insanity. The response to the donation is total nonsense. What a shame that so many people seem stuck in thinking that may have been useful a thousand years ago but has almost no relevance today.
...defend it's historic province of Kosovo against KLA Albanian narco-thugs.
Really? That was the most incompetent, useless, and brutal "defense" that I have ever seen. I would go so far as to say Yugoslavia's "defense" was a non-sequitur. Seriously. What the fuck? They needed to be stopped.
You should be at 5 insightful right now.

Tell that to the CEO of 3DFX who said something similar about a small/cheap startup called NVidia. I am sure he knew better than us too.

Really? That was the most incompetent, useless, and brutal "defense" that I have ever seen. I would go so far as to say Yugoslavia's "defense" was a non-sequitur. Seriously. What the fuck? They needed to be stopped.
