OK, so what if you want to live in a different kind of house than the community thinks is 'best'?
I suppose your house specifications would be up to whomever built it. Since it isn't your house, but the community's house (they just let you live there) you probably wouldn't have any say in the matter. It would be a take it or leave it situation with the "leave it" portion being homeless or having to find a different community with better houses.
I should mention the "community" should be thought of as small city sized. I envision many (10,000+) such communities in an area as large as the lower 48.
How do you handle the situation where 'hopefully' doesn't occur, or if half of the people decide to grow potatoes?
My understanding is that there are a few working assumptions:
1) Anyone freeloading or abusing the system will be either voted out or coerced in one way or another. 2) Overproduction of a resource will not be commonplace as some people will abandon that job in order to fulfill their own wants/desires. If Bill McGonigle wants a new PC, but no one is specializing in PCs, he will likely start to specialize in PCs.
In absense of these assumptions, there may be a problem.
1) In a house/apartment/etc. 2) Depends on your definition of "state". 3) Maybe.
To clarify, you can live where ever you like. The domicile in which you live is built by members of your community (possibly read as state) for the enjoyment of its members. That is, if there aren't enough places to live, the community will build places to live of its own accord. Logically, if there aren't enough of 'X', then more of 'X' will be built, procured, etc (assuming supply is ample).
This is an example of a gift economy. A working example are the kibbutzim of Israel. Imagine if all economic activity was based on the BSD (or in some variants, the GPL) license. If I like growing potatoes, then I grow potatoes. I give them to people who want them. I ask for nothing in return, but reciprocation will hopefully occur. At the very least, people will know me as a respectful person who is doing his best for the community.
The "too bad" part would apply to someone who simply leeches off the efforts of the community. The community could decide wether to expel that person, do nothing, or whatever. It would depend on the community.
Without sounding like a troll, I have the feeling that many people don't really care about rights here or abroad so long as the dividends are paid. If it comes down to meeting The Street estimates or taking a stand against human rights abuses, most investors will choose the latter -- some because they don't care, some because they don't believe it is their corporation's place to be involved in that.
I recall asking my father if he would buy $.10 hamburgers from a restaurant that used slave labor. Without blinking he said, "Of course". I guess so long as it is their jackboot on someone else's face, they won't have any problems with the system.
Recall that Microsoft, as a publicly traded corporation, has a fiduciary responsibility to make as much profit as possible without doing anything illegal. You can bet your bottom dollar that if a pro-active stance regarding China decreases profits, the directors will be replaced by those who will change that policy.
I understand your point, but using GM as a comparision isn't a good idea. GM is all but bankrupt. Many of the more bearish investors are betting heavily on GM's bankruptcy within a year or so, especially if they cant get the UAW to make some concessions.
Interestingly enough, I doubt 1% of the population knows that RealID was passed as well as what it is.
In 2 years when the Feds are ramping up readiness for RealID, and the states are starting to complain, you'll see some opposition. Such is the way in our country -- don't complain about something until it directly affects you.
"Does that trouble anyone here? The idea that God might be fuckin' with our heads? Anyone have trouble sleeping restfully with that thought in their heads? God's running around, burrying fossils: 'Hu hu ho. We will see who believes in me now, ha HA. Im a prankster god. I am killing me. Ho ho ho ho."
Of course, adding memory won't happen anytime soon. Joe user looks at GHz and buys on that alone. My mom has a P4 1.5GHz w/ 128MB PC-133 RAM. The thing takes a good 3 minutes to start up and chokes when any programs are opened. My girlfriend has a Celeron 766 w/ 256MB RAM @ 66MHz. Guess which is faster.
I'd take a P3 with sufficient RAM over a high end Athlon 64 with 128MB any day.
Television is no more a luxury item than is a car or radio. In most areas, there is a local government-run channel that lets people know when certain things will be occuring (ie, trash pickup will be a day late this week due to a problem with the trucks). It is important that people know what is going on in their neighborhood and television is a much better way to disseminate this information than mass mailings.
Of course, I'm familiar with your political views, namely that people who can't afford to pay the going rate don't deserve the service in question. I'm sure you'd be content letting people starve if they didn't have enough money... but wait... the Gods of the Free Market won't let that happen since there will always be a seller willing to sell at a low enough price so everyone can buy. It all works out so perfectly in your perfect little world. I'd love for you to have to live in a run-down apartment with a dead-end job and no hope to ever get out of the situation you were born into. Maybe then you'd get off of your libertarian high horse.
And yes, this is a troll as well, so if the mods could please mod me down, I'll be happy.
We're settling for too little these days from our leaders. Unless you think Herb Kohl is infallable except his position on the Patriot Act, then you need to run against him.
Considering the majority of Americans are categorized as "overweight" or "obese", please define "not enough food".
The reason why most Americans are overweight or obese is quite simple. The cheapest food is fattening and loaded with sugar. If I'm not mistaken, you are much more likely to be overweight or obese if you are poor. Many Americans suffer from malnutrition. You probably recall the food pyramid. Many people eat according to that, only turned upside down.
Next time you are at the market, see which foods are cheap and which are expensive. You'll find that the crap with 90% saturated fat is much less than the healthy food.
I often use the term Libertarian Socialism to describe what you are describing as the terms "Socialism" and "Communism" mean nothing more than "totalitiarian" these days.

That could be their key to success. As of now, I simply see that the P/E is 110.83, which is still astronomical.
If I had money, I'd be buying up put options on Google until the cows came home.
Congrats, you have a stalker.
Oh well, we'll have to catch it in MM.
Sir, the wikipedia link you provide counters the utexas link regarding the "myth" of QWERTY being designed to slow down typing.
Quite so.
The entire price of Google is based on name recognition the basic plan of investors is something like this:
1) Google is popular
2) ???
3) Profit!
As you said, Google sells ads and a few SE boxes. With such a price, you'd assume stock in doubleclick.net would be on the order of $1,000/share.

Interesting.
If you check the list of submitted bills, it isn't there either. It is mentioned in the Record, but only if you search for a closely numbered bill.
The GPO site is also missing the bill. Let us get our tin-foil hats ready now.

I just found it odd that someone who invested time in Gentoo decided to simply jump ship and work for The Enemy.
Its more likely a "right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing" thing than anything else.

Sell out.
Slick over-marketed bullshit is what convinces congressmen to pass bad bills, so I assume that it should work here.
If you think an earnest conversation with a politician is the way to enact change, then I have some ocean-front property in Kansas to sell to you.
Good point.

I live in Fairborn, OH.
It must suck to be able to afford a house without any assistance.
Excellent troll if I may say so myself.

Run anyway.

I recall hearing about a poll that asked UK voters if they'd consider voting Lib Dem if they thought there was a chance they could win.
Something like 60% said they would.

The hell they do. They play the holophoner!
