  1. Re:Rational on Marijuana Could Prevent Alzheimer's, New Study · · Score: 1

I really think it comes down to the fact that there is no way to quantitatively determine how high a person might be at any given time. With alcohol, you can get a finite measurement of blood alcohol content. Considering that marijuana stays in your system for much longer than alcohol, it would be difficult to impose laws based upon saturation thresholds as is done with alcohol. In addition to that, differing strains/growing conditions of marijuana provide a different level and quality of intoxication which cannot be quantitatively measured. On top of all of that, people have vastly differing tolerances to the mighty herb. In short, if you can't measure the effects, there is no way to prosecute. Law makers want to be able to prosecute for driving under the influence, public intoxication, etc. and they effectively can't do that. That's why it is still illegal...

Why would a Wookiee, an eight-foot tall Wookiee, want to live on Endor, with a bunch of two-foot tall Ewoks? That does not make sense! But more important, you have to ask yourself: What does this have to do with this case? Nothing. Ladies and gentlemen, it has nothing to do with this case! It does not make sense! Look at me. I'm a lawyer defending a major record company, and I'm talkin' about Chewbacca! Does that make sense? Ladies and gentlemen, I am not making any sense! None of this makes sense! And so you have to remember, when you're in that jury room deliberatin' and conjugatin' the Emancipation Proclamation, does it make sense? No! Ladies and gentlemen of this supposed jury, it does not make sense! If Chewbacca lives on Endor, you must acquit! The defense rests.

I would wager that his fear of the public finding out that he lied to his country, defied justice and decieved the very people he swore to serve would be a greater weight than the importance of covering up a breach of privacy on that same populace.
    That's a nice thought...
Unfortunately, coercion to "play ball" and the retaliatory effects of making the truth public often outweigh honesty. Confirmation of any of these allegations would effectively incriminate Mr. Hayden, as well. After all, not only being an important and intelligent person (as you have pointed out), but also as Director of the NSA, he is certainly aware of the legal and social ramifications of this surveillance. Just because the President "told him to do it" doesn't mean he is innocent, and criminals often attempt to hide their involvment in a crime. By lying.
  10. Kmart Electronics Department on What Was Your First Computer? · · Score: 1

I remember spending HOURS in the electronics department at Kmart poking and peeking on the display VIC 20 and C64 machines. I was pretty young, about 7 or so, and would copy code from the manual and end up creating sounds and graphics. At the time, it seemed like a lot of work just to get oscillating tones. I ended up having a lot more fun with the word processors... The managers at Kmart would kick me out for using up all of the ribbon and eraser tape.

After that, I met a friend with and 8086 and flight simulator on an amber screen. That was the bomb. I've since become a network engineer and student pilot.

I think Christian fundamentalists bring up the argument of "nature vs nurture" so often is, in part, because they don't want to bring up the real question: does homosexuality harm society to the point it should be discouraged?
I think to Christian fundamentalists, there is no question, real or not. As far as they are concerned, if the Bible says it's wrong, then it's wrong. There is no debating the issue because it is "The Word of God"... I think that is the reason why they fail to raise the question you have posed.
