I wish I had some good mod points, you would get them. Well said! I think software developers may be due for a change in their approach. It gets frustrating that with each new game/application that it SEEMS they feel the need to push the hardware to it's limits. If I was the tinfoil hat type (ok I am, but try to keep it in check) I could imagine the developers (some, not all) were in cahoots with the hardware mfg.'s to keep turning boxes obsolete every 6 months. So now to run the newest games/apps you are pressured into neww hardware anually. Thank goodness I'm not that paranoid...yet.

I see almost the same tactics happening now, and am SPOOKED by it.

Kinda the same here. I triple boot: W98se for some old games I can't give up, XP Pro for some new games and software I run, and Mandrake 9.0 which I LOVE!:) Being a nOOb caused some steep learning curves with *nix for me, but it gets better every day. BTW, since I switched to Firefox this summer, I seem to be fine running junk cleaners (AdAware & Spy Bot S&D) only monthly instead of DAILY (IE) and have only had ONE peice of junk come aboard. That one was my stepdaughter using my pc to "chat" once (she got to Yahoo with IE). Before with IE, my daily cleanings averaged around 25-30 malware programs. Unbeleivable!

I used Star Office, then was OO and I use that now. I have had FAR LESS hassle with these than any version of MS Office (O 95, O 97, O 2000, O XP, I have used them all). Until my last reformat/reinstall of my OS's, I have had both MS Office, and Open Office ( or Star Office depending on when) installed. This last time (about 11 months ago) I saw no reason to bloat my harddrive with MS Office, so didn't bother installing it. I have had zero problems or regrets over these 11 months, and STILL see no reason to install MS Office. Those 4 install discs of MS Office don't even make good coasters so all they do is collect dust. I love having a CHOICE about application software! Does it sve me $? No, not yet because I was foolish enough to be scared of compatibility, so Ive bought the PAST versions of MS Office. But the NEXT "flavor de jour" that MS comes out with won't get my hard earned $.
