The best part of our company is the people with over 4,000 emails in their "Deleted Items" folder, since they dont understand the concept of the "Deleted" part.

One day I was helping a secretary clean up her old email (before migrating her to Thunderbird actually) and went to empty her Trash folder. She went nuts and said, "Wait, there is stuff in there I want". Turns out she had hundreds of email messages in dozens of folders and sub folders in her Trash folder, neatly organizing a bunch of mail she wanted to keep. Apparently she had been filing things in her Trash folder for years.

I should remember this when I organize my paper files; I could just put them in folders and then put them in the little box next to my desk labelled "Trash" and they will magically get filed for me every evening.

Or better yet, moon or mars based telescopes. The happy side effect is that a few astronomers will survive for awhile on the moon/mars after the earth becomes uninhabitable.

Actually if you think about nearly every problem we have, we almost always concentrate on the symptoms instead of the cause. Which brings us back to why a few astronomers on the moon/mars would be a good thing....

  14. Re:A long time coming... on China Prepares to Launch Alternate Internet · · Score: 1

I never could understand what the big deal is here; people can get their DNS information from whoever they want, and the big ISPs can setup their DNS servers any way they want. For example, lets say China has DNS servers that resolve "google.com" to some chinese server. Any US ISP can route google.com to the "right" (current) place, and then make a pointer (say, google.com.china) to point to the chinese server. US users would have to get to the chinese server via www.google.com.china, and if the owners of the chinese server are advertising their products in the US they would have to use that address as well, otherwise oh well no one in the US could find them. It is stupid to do things this way, but unless everyone is willing to co-operate, I don't see how it can be avoided, but I doubt this will fragment the Internet.

    And the bad:

The Reader will sell for about $400.

Having to spend $400 before getting any actual content is pretty harsh. The readability and low power consumption are a step in the right direction, but until the price drops considerably this won't be mainstream thats for sure.
