well in response to giving old hardware new life, i have a friend of mine who works for a charity, my "out of date" PIII's, slow CD ROM's and tiny 100GB HDD's are very well received by him and the organisation he works for and certainly put to good use....
However it wouldn't have stopped my thigh bone being broken when I was "helped" off my bike at a junction by a kindly lady pulling across my path.
What you probably need is a version of the michelin man suit !
Anything that adds to the protection of motorbike pilots has to be a good thing, but I would suggest that a lot of the problem is from two areas, pilots riding too fast for the conditions, and car drivers / other road users not being aware of bikes.
I was wearing a jacket with armour in it, and a 400ukp crash helmet, without the full face lid I would be dead as the lower part of it seemed to have been the first point of contact I had with the ground as I performed a face plant on my way to going 30-0 mph in a few feet. When on a bike assume all other road users are idiots, and spend as mcuh money as you can (and more) on your personal protection, it *will* save your life!
If you have an accident on your bike the next important bit is the speed you get taken to somewhere that can put you back together... luckily I crashed a 2 minute ambulance ride away from the local hospital (and you have to hope that as you lie there in the road a "helpful" stranger doesn't remove your crash helmet unless they know what they are doing)
Nevermind the fact that more government departments are going to be added to the list (The Post Office and Food Standards Agency among them) how about the fact that it is going to massively increase the power of the people in these departments, are they are going to be vetted before the deparment is added to the approve list ? (i suspect not)
Also consider the legacy of Stephen Byers former minister for transport who was caught out emailing about the political slant of activists caught up in the Paddington rail crash, with the increased range of departments able to get at our electronic history / demand PGP keys etc what kind of requests will the government be making next time about people that are speaking against them ?
i worked for one of the companies featured in the chart, and was dismayed to know that a corporate anthem was being created internally, they went out and brought the kit to produce the track, the corp vid that went with it was intended to be used to convey what the company was about to potential clients, not sure if it ever worked (or was actually used)... of course the anthem itself is now used as the hold music.... used to be a nightmare phoning in from a meeting *knowing* you would get put on hold and be subjected to it !!
IIRC there is some study about eyesight that seems to think that the brain adjusts within about 2 weeks as well... an experiment was done where people wore glasses that inverted vision, however after 2 weeks the brain had "corrected" this and vision appeared returned to "normal"
IIRC this also led to the conclusion that babies see updside down for the first 2 weeks of there lives before the brain "fixes" the problem....
A company I used to work for decided that as part of the brand it was building sponsoring a whale was a good idea, the naming of which was opened to everyone, after some 300+ emails (in a company of around 50) some of the names were getting silly and in the interests of finishing the thread (and saving my sanity / inbox) I sent the link to the exploding whale (calling the whale splat wasn't that popular...)
To be honest i'm surprised it took this long for a report like this to appear, I maintain a small network in a small company, we have mainly win machines except for one server and my laptop... the overhead on keeping the win machines patched (5 on the network) is crazy, I spend too much of my valuable time hunting down patches for machines.... luckily at the moment IIS is shutdown as all of the dev work is being completed on linux. however I have to keep the patches up to date otherwise I'll be spending a week or 2 updating the server in a month or so time.
Will MS really write a new IIS from scratch I doubt it, and if they did would it really improve on where things are now.... it would take n months to write, beta and then lauch IIS+ 1.0 then people would want to know it was ok, some would try it, but most people would want to see IIS+ 2.0 before moving their web applications to it..... timescale ? how long is a piece of string.... and would it be any better, would MS allow external code reviews (or opensource) to ensure that IIS+ was better / secure. I doubt it....

"Iceberg dead ahead..... oh sorry, only joking !"
So maybe this would be a good reason to get M$ back in court, this is far more serious I would have thought than tieing a user into Windows and IE.....
Seems a shame when you consider the point of Hotmail in the first place
*sigh*

The plot has been lost if found return to the greenhouse...
I sail in the Solent (south England) and there have been reports of rogue waves hitting the shore line some miles from where a high speed cat has been travelling, there have also been reports of boats being capsized by these waves, can't remember if there has been loss of life yet, if not, it's sure to happen soon, haven't got a link but I do know there was an article about it in the RYA magazine a few months back....
So if we move to some sort of open source software for video streaming does that mean we will end up with more and more bandwidth being taken up with home videos and the such, @ least @ the moment if you need to spend some money to get the required video streaming technology in place it prevents (or reduces) the amount of rubbish clogging the web....
...but then again with video streaming open maybe we will find new directors and movie makers etc that don't pander to the Hollywood rubbish we are subjected to today *dreams* And with current advances in bandwidth maybe that won't be a problem in the future, so I guess it is all about choice.
Oh and of course any type of limiting of choice is a bad thing. As the article says "sit quietly and we will control all you see and hear"

Actually having just spent the last 2 months trying to sort out a DSl for a small office in Dublin, there exists a company worse than BT...

as the author maybe I should have added the word agency after the name Stephen Byers...
I sit corrected

I love the memorystick camera...
better go and update my wish list !
although I still think they should come with a bigger memorystick as standard 8Mb is a lot small, esp when paying 450 USD the top spec clie

Concorde hits Mach 2.1, the Mig 25 (Foxbat) 2.5 and the SR71 Mach 3+

The plot has been lost if found return to the greenhouse...
now if you could get a computer system to link scalextric for laptimes etc (and maybe Murray Walker) into a computer then that would be cool....
