that all these touchy feel-good articles always come out in praise of Microsoft when there is a major product release? Does anyone else think it to be too much of a coincidence?
To be an illegal monopoly you only have to have the power to distort the market, and be using that power in a way that has been deemed abusive.
Having a monopoly is not illegal. There is not such thing as an illegal monopoly. What there is is the illegal usage of a monopoly.
For example, Microsoft's desktop monopoly is not illegal, it is the manner in which Microsoft uses that desktop monopoly that has been found to be illegal.
The author of the article has not shown that (1) Google has a monopoly, and (2) if Google does indeed have a monopoly, that it is using that monopoly illegally.
The author does not show Google is a monopoly.

Google's Silent Monopoly

Google appears to have less than 85% of the search market, less than what is needed to be a monopoly. (for example, Windows has over 90% marketshare)
Having failed in proving that Google is a monopoly, the basis for the rest of the article is vacuous.
However since posts lower than zero do not get displayed automatically,

It's literally taking (willingly) from the rich and giving to the poor.
While I like that the Gates' are giving away large sums of moeny to those less fortunate, we need to keep in mind that the money came from stock price appreciation caused by Microsoft's illegal business practices.
The money was not willingly given by the rich, it was stolen via monopoly-based software pricing.
whether Microsoft is driving innovation or playing catch-up
Microsoft is stifling innovation in the industry. Why should others innovate when the innovation of others just gets "integrated" into Windows and offered for free?
They got there second with a tolerable product and then marketed the hell out of it.
Microsoft rose to the top by illegal business practices, from per-processor pricing to the illegal leveraging of their monopoly in order to get the marketshare. Read the trial transcripts where Microsoft execs admitted that they had to bundle second rate products with Windows in order to grab the marketshare.
Microsoft's stock has been floundering for these past few years since Windows 2000 came on the scene. Microsoft needs Vista to jump-start the amount of revenue they take in. Those who want to use virtualization more than likely will not need to features of versions above MS Vista Home, yet Microsoft is forcing those users to spend more than they want to or need to.
Microsoft put a new UI on MS Office because Microsoft said that the users of MS Office could not find all of the features in the product. What Microsoft has not commented upon was whether the users wanted to find any more of the features besides the ones that they use.
I would venture to say that the overwhelming majority of MS Office users do not need to use, or even want to use, most of the features that are present in those bloated applications.
Lately I have been actively avoiding Yahoo, even though as recently as a year ago I was spending a lot of time in their portal.
The rewrite of the yahoo message boards is a fiasco. Never has something that was working so well been turned into something that is all but unusable. For example, the pages are slow to load and navigation is abysmal, a combination of problems that causes frustration - when the poor navigation causes you to land on the wrong page, it takes a long time to back out and find your way again.
Yahoo server software has to be the most unreliable of any of the major portals. The are far too many instances of sessions being dropped.
The TV listings have all sorts of quirks in the navigation. Unless I hit the links in just the right order, I wind up with some cryptic error URL. The section should be made to be less Web 2.0 and more stable. I've switched over to TitanTV.com now.
Yahoo customer service is THE WORST. It is impossible to talk with a human, even after exhausting much time trying to explain the situation to an uncaring autoreply robot.
Yes, yahoo has lost its way. It may be too far gone to get back on track.
Considering that this $100 laptop does not come bundled with a Microsoft OS, we can really expect impartial reporting from MSN.
Having failed on a technology basis to have a Microsoft OS used, now Microsoft is going to play the role of the spoiled bully and try to cause the entire project to fail.
Now every CIO of a publically-traded US company will have to make the decision whether or not it is an appropriate risk to the CIO's comapny to continue using Linux.
This is the exact type of FUD that Microsoft is going after. No need to file any lawsuits. The aversion of risk attitude in public corporations will force spineless CIOs simply to stop considering Linux to be a solution.
It would be in the best interest of the Open Source community to have a real court case to resolve this question once and for all.
Netcraft confirms: IBM, Sun, and Google make boatloads of money off of the countless unnamed and unpaid developers who write the code that they use. Does the amount they contribute back exceed the amount they gain by benefiting from the work of others?
IBM, Sun and Google (and others) employ developers who write Open Source Software, and who work on Open Source Projects.
How much money are other companies making off of the development work that has been donated to the Open Source movement by IBM, Sun and Google (and others)?
If KLM does support the iPod, I hope they change the LCD screens. When the person in front of you reclines the seat a bit, the angle of the LCD makes it impossible to view the LCD. There is no means to adjust the viewing angle of the LCD sufficiently to accomodate the tilt of the seat back.
Since most people recline their seatbacks, the LCDs that KLM uses are basically useless.
It may also be that fact that in the US, the Justice Department caved in to Microsoft during the anti-trust legalities. However, over in Asia, Microsoft's illegal practices are looked at somewhat more closely, and the governments there are less inclined to allow the illegal leveraging of a monopoly to continue unchecked. So Microsoft has to remain on its best behaviour.

Gates also missed the start of the Internet, and had to scramble to retrofit support for it in Windows.
What needs to happen before people stop thinking of this monopolist less as a visionary, and more as the drain on corporation finances that he is?
Solve the spam problem, don't hide it.

Solve the problems we all have, not the strawman problems that are created to justify the "solutions" being proposed.
If you really want to deal with meta-data validation, take that project up in Web 3.0.
The article makes no mention of Microsoft's egregious use of DRM throughout Vista. It was hardly the "definitive" article it professes to be.

Because the comment is correct, and your message indicates you do not understand the issue.
The ability to change the Start-up sound in Vista has been removed.
Why am I stuck with the musty-sounding Vista start-up sound clip that Microsoft thinks I will like?
We used new source automation tools that removes any potential buffer overflow attacks.
News articles detailing Windows XP buffer overflow attacks are abundant.
