If Vista is as complicated as its specs say it is, I hope Microsoft takes another two years to get this done

Operating systems are Microsoft's core competency. You would think that by now Microsoft would know how to estimate the scope of the project required to write an upgrade for an existing operating system.

The delays, no matter how well explained, are still delays; and are continuing evidence of Microsoft's incompetence in the area of operating system development.

In a job where the main task is communicating with customers over the phone, the company needs to assure that the customer service reps can speak understandable English. I live in New York City, I am accustomed to (and enjoy) the various "flavors" of English that are spoken. However, the American Airlines customer service representative was all but incomprehensible.

I am reminded of having spent quite a few minutes on the phone with American Airlines customer supprt a few days ago. I had to change the days of my flight, and the aa.com site did not allow me to do that. I had to talk with a person at American Airlines.

Well, the person I talked with could barely speak English. A couple times during the conversation, I had to say, "I did not understand what you just said, but at this point you should be asking me about [some topic]... is that what you just asked me?

I am sure that American Airline is saving a lot of money outsourcing their customer service department to somewhere, but I have to wonder how long it will be before they realize that the road to long-term profitability is travelled by increasing the top-line revenue numbers. You do not increase revenues by convincing customers to go elsewhere due to poor, outsourced service.

I just finished spending about 3 hours on a test install on my IBM Thinkpad notebook.

    In a nutshell:

    • install was flawless. Very clean, very fast. I like the LIve CD initial install, then the icon to do the full install.
    • apps install were a good selection, not the usual Linux overwhelming "install all apps I can find". Organization of the apps on the menus was nice.
    • I like the admin capability, instead of having to bounce to root when I want to do something. Much more thought out than Microsoft Vista's harassing UAC.
    • wireless support was lacking. It saw my Atheros 802.11abg PC Card, but could not do anything with it. I could not connect to my wireless network, even when I cycled security down to 'no security', i.e., it could not connect to a wide open access point.
    • I tried to send a test page to a network printer (a share on a Windows box) , and the whole notebook hung solid. Power-down required to get it moving again.

So overall, I'd say, "excellent" on the visuals, apps choices, functionality (so long as wireless networking or network printers are not needed).

IMO, desktop users will be happy. Notebook users will be less than happy.

I appreciate the concern regarding the proliferation of OSS licenses of late, and I (as a user of and contributor to OSS) agree with you that fewer licenses are better than more licenses. However, we cannot dictate to anyone which license must be used for their original code. If you don't like the license someone chooses to use, then don't use the code that was written under that license. It's really a simple concept.
