  1. Yeah, that's more of a deflection than anything else. Why should you even have to worry about an OS deleting your files because some third party tells the OS vendor to do so?

    [aside: this coming weekend I plan to convert the second of my three notebooks from Windows to Linux, due to the Windows 10 update malware tactic. If the plan to delete files on my systems goes through, the conversion of the remainder of my Windows PCs will only be accelerated.]

    Mossberg is correct on this. I've had to explain a complicated remote (for a non-smart TV) to one of my parents, who has hearing problems.

    The only functionality on the remote he really needs is power on/off (turning both set-top box and TV on and off), volume, mute, numeric keypad. closed captions on/off. That's pretty much it.

    Yet I get phone calls asking why the closed captions switched over to a different language, or what happened to the closed captions, etc., etc., etc., etc.

    I asked the cable company (Time Warner) for one of their "senior citizen" remotes, and it was more complicated than the one that came with the TV.

    He left out one important caveat --- when there is adequate competition present so that the consumer has a choice, when the company in question does not lobby legislative bodies to reduce or eliminate that competition.

    Well, now we are seeing where Microsoft's QA does not focus their attention. Why wouldn't Microsoft's QA test for this scenario? Possibly because Microsoft does not care, and does not want, other OS's on its hard disk in a dual-boot scenario?

    My opinion about Microsoft is not necessarily the same as my opinion about Windows. From a recent comment of mine:

    What about those, such as myself, who actually had liked Windows in the past, and upgraded multiple licenses with every release (except Vista and Windows 8), starting at Windows NT? . I've stated here in the past that I would be willing to continue to upgrade my Windows licenses, even paying for the privilege of doing so, if I could turn off the egregiously excessive data harvesting that Windows 10 performs. However now, that I've already moved one computer from Windows to Linux, I'll add one more condition for me to stay with Windows... I'm still willing to pay for the upgrade license, but in addition to being able to turn off the egregiously excessive data harvesting, I would also want my computer not to become just another screen that advertisers (including Microsoft) can use to show me advertisements.

    Yeah, they're changing. Windows Update is now a malware distribution service, downloading and running software that tries to trick users into installing software they don't want.

    Can you ever trust Windows Update again after that fiasco?

    nearly 80% still have chosen not to run it.

    Of those 21% cited, I have to wonder how many actually wanted the upgrade? Of those who fought Microsoft's malware in order not be foreably upgraded, I wonder what percentage are looking to a different OS besides Windows for their next OS upgrade?

    So... this is what Microsoft considers to be good news nowadays?

    One local store here is very quick in processing the chip card. I don't know if it is a reader thing or a back-end processing thing, but I insert the card and in a couple of seconds it is done. On the other hand, the chain stores seem to be dog slow in reading/processing the chip cards.

    So let's abort the whole project because there are some transition problems.

    It's been a while since I've used SQLite, maybe it does have a secure delete mode, I don't know. But if it doesn't, then it may not be the correct tool for the job.

    ...Bottom line, what makes your "root cause" more valid than the one that TFS mentioned?...

    If the requirement of the app is to properly and fully delete messages, it is the responsibility of the programmer who implements that requirement to assure the requirement is satisfied. It is not the responsibility of the tool to assure it is being properly used to meet the requirements of the app.

    That's not the root cause.

    The root cause is the programmer who used SQLite and did not know that SQLite did not fully delete, or did know but did not care.

    SQLite will only do what it is told to do by the programmer.

    Microsoft is slowly but, apparently, surely removing the control of your computer from you and giving it to Microsoft.

    Each of these pronouncements makes me even happier that I did not succumb to the Microsoft malware that tried to trick me into upgrading my Windows 7 PCs.

    And, btw, my tally so far is one Windows computer has been converted to Linux. Now I'm starting to work on the next one.

    I have two strong concerns about the proposal in front of us.

    .
    1) vulnerability - reducing the encryption level for the phones affects not just criminals but everyone. Phones can (and are) used for very legitimate purposes and those phones need secure encryption. Once the encryption is weakened for criminals' phones, the encryption is weakened for all our phones.

    2) trust - once the police have the ability to "crack" into criminals' phones, what is to stop them from "cracking" into anyone's phone (in a StingRay-like scenario) ~because they can~?

    I've already switched one of my computers from Windows to Linux because of Microsoft's Windows 10 disaster. The surprising part (for me, at least) is that I've not even looked back.
