the problem with this house is that it is 3k sf of conventional framed home and a bunch of toys. using the proper materials and site orientation a home can be built that sells energy to the utility company. good, livable, sustainable family homes are being built in colorado that almost never turn on a furnace or air conditioner and pay for the solar cells in 7 years.
the reason so few go green? partly they think they need a bigger house than they actually use and partly the big home builders only do things the traditional way. think of your house. how often do yo use the formal dining room or den or living room, etc? inventory how you actually live, not how homebuilders want you to think you live.
my guess would be the 32-bit sandbox for legacy apps. perhaps if it ran pure x64 it would be half the size? dunno. no a computer guy, just speculating.
In my view, the only way to minimize acts of terror, keep illegal immigrants at home, and make the world 'safe' is with economic development.
i agree. the problem is that economic development for many means entering a country illegally. perhaps countries that are losing people to illegal immigration should look at themselves and fix the problem.
the people of iran for example want economic development, not a showdown with the u.s..
and bush is proposing economic aid. problem is this aspect of the newest 'plan' isnt talked about and the fact that aid workers and job seekers are routinely murdered. kinda hard to contribute positively when your life is on the line. effective security allows for economic growth. eventually security wont be needed.
if it was just a stub out for a fixture, it wasnt a big deal. if it was for a toilet, bigger deal but fixable. anyway, a foot isnt going to make too much difference in how well it drains either. unless the plumber was really bad, he probably still maintained the correct slope under the slab. if his run was 21' instead of the proper 20', he would have accounted for the 21' in his run since that is where he thought the plumbing went.
last summer i had a plumber put some plumbing in about 8" off. then the framer put his wall in based on the plumbing. i got called out because they have floor joists 8" too short and the stairs wouldnt fit. the plumber didnt make much profit on that job.
the point. if it truly is a mistake, the one making the mistake pays to fix it.
Just eliminate such people with automation. A bureaucrat and an expert system have a lot in common- but the one big difference is that the expert system is incorruptable.
but the bureaucrat isnt. how are only the corrupt to be eliminated? i am not sure what an 'expert system' is. i assume, since this is slashdot, that it is some sort of computer/software system. someone has to create that, and who is to say corruption/unfairness isnt built into it? how does it approve the set of building plans i submitted to the county this morning?
American* workers cross borders to work all the time. Look and listen next time you are in California, Arizona, Texas, Colorado, Nevada etc. Another good example is Niagara Falls. Lots of border crossing Americans* there.
I wasn't aware that "American*" was a "race".
*The western hemisphere, where I live, consists of North, Central and South America. I think everyone here is American.
so my prints, along with the last 20 fares, are on the door handle... what about the steering wheel, gear selector etc? what about evidence on the victims body? murder weapon etc? sorry, you arent going to be put in jail for murder on fingerprint evidence alone. even a free lawyer could defend that case.
these guys manufacture them. though, i think most are conversions from motorcycles.
it is my understanding that trikes are not necessarily easier to ride. if you can ride a bicycle you can ride a motorcycle. once you start moving physics takes over. it is hard to put a bike down. a smaller bike, like one that gets 70+, will be easier to control when you start and stop. this is due to the lighter weight. i strongly suggest taking a course in riding a bike before you buy one. i think most are two days over a weekend.
not to scare you but......some accident trends for motorcycles to look out for. my dad has been hit twice and still rides. his old helmets dont look so hot, but his head is still on. i, knock on wood, never have been in an accident.
that is interesting. when i was in my teens i drove a '71 bmw sport bike and it routinely got 45 mpg. 450lb bike with a flat 750cc engine. it cruised good at 75 and would top out about 100mph. i got the bike when i was 14 and it dropped a valve seat at 19 so i gave it to my dad and he fixed it, then sold it. anyway...
i am curious about what bikes you are looking at. the mpg ratings listed here are considerably better than 25. it lists '06 1200cc harley sportsters that get 45 mpg. the 1200cc bmws get as high as 65mpg.
as an aside, i used to drive that bike to the sturgis motorcycle rally. grisled harely riders would come over to check the bike out. in my experience bikers dont care what you ride. and girls dont care much either. they either think a bike is sexy, dangerous or both.
right, but we live today, and this is the reality. i speculate that thousands years ago, prior to articfial, imaginary, political boundaries, a traveler would have a decent chance of being killed by travelling through the land of another tribe. people have always been, and unfortunately probably always will be, territorial and murderous. very likely the ancient past wasnt happy fun utopia land.
i think in our world, and the reality that technology has created for us, we need to monitor who comes and goes from our country. perhaps the particular task it protecting the populace from people who want to kill others because of stupid reasons such as: color, religion, or geographical location. if connected red flag purchases helps...
it is unfortunate, i also would like to live in a world where we could travel anyplace anytime anonymously.
dont you need, like, a passport or something to fly into and out of the u.s.? doesnt that sorta ruin your privacy? i mean, like, they know you are entering the country as soon as you get here.
sounds like they are trying to be informed about 'bob the nutcase who wants to kill you becuase you are different' before he hits the u.s. soil.
Seems to me that it may also be that CEOs and others who make decisions haven't had the chance to experience it on a new home computer yet. I remember MAC OS hasn't take off yet, but it will be adopted by businesses more and more as execs started having it at home and liking the pretty colors and the bells and whistles. I suspect these decisions aren't based as much on stability as we'd all like to think -- I think a lot of adoption of MAC OSX will happen when powerful people (not necessarily technical people) start wanting some of MAC OSX's fun or pretty stuff at the office. And they just haven't had a chance to find out about it yet.
o dear god i despise that stretch of road. every time i visit pittsburgh i have to go that way and it always sucks.
anyway, out here in colorado they have electronic signs stating the road conditions along i-70 to the ski slopes. traffic often gets backed up at those signs. once you get past each sign it is like no one is on the road.
also, the entrances to tunnels out here are lit in way that is suppose to make the driver think the tunnel is wider than it actually is. this mostly works until drivers get into the tunnel and have to go around a couple bends...
good point on the lm/W. i didnt know they were that close.
i was thinking more of life cycle costs. if memory serves a typical CF lasts 6-10k hours. LEDs can go 35-50k hours. my optimistic point was that as cost on the LEDs come down, they will be the more efficient choice (overall) than CFs.
also, someone up above made a comment about LED lights and got moderated troll. he is correct, LEDs are the next thing in lighting, as soon as the cost comes down. considerably more efficient than CFs.
last note. i put CFs in my current house when i moved in 4 years ago. i havent had to replace a single one yet. and i too am a night owl.
Most states require you to be able to pass a test (which involves reading) to get a hunting license. And your point is/was?
...if it only saves one life...
but really i am just sick of the elitist attitude on slashdot. i grew up in a hunting family. we fished, hunted birds and big game. we ate it all. most of the meat i ate growing up came from what we caught/hunted. we grew most of our fruits and veggies in a garden behind the house. we made jelly from apples/crab apples, etc, that grew in the yard. we canned, etc. we made motorcycle leathers and misc. other things from deer hide. we lived in town.
i dont hunt any more because i dont feel the need to and never really enjoyed it. but i dont refer to those who do as backwards dolts like many here. many have these preconcieved notions. respect peoeple.
few here talked about the merits of the article. it was all bad jokes about bambi killers and cheney. seriously. someone else sights and approves the shot before a blind person pulls the trigger. probably a lot safer than bird hunting.
i like to play this game where i change the topic of an argument to see if it makes sense...
I'm sorry. I'm not trying to be rude, or mean. But seriously, if someone can't read a bus schedule well enough that they need their OWN CAR to get around, I really don't want them driving a deadly weapon around. Even if they're VERY careful, its just not safe. There WILL be accidents where people are killed, and I don't think that the value of someone getting to a location in a timely manner should outrank knowing that a human being will die as a result of this.
2.7 deaths per 100,000 hunting license sold - hunting fatalities in texas
16.8 per 100,000 people - highway fatalities in texas

dont try to force your unpatriotic, satanic, wiccan ways upon me! i only recognize the latin alphabet and will not recognize your demonic, anti-latin agenda.
why does everything have to be 'apolitical'? what about the other 25 types of political? you are all a bunch of bigots with your 'i only like apolitical' technology forums!
there i win the argument, i made a baseless assertion. ha!:P

you could have been helpful and polite. but instead you had to be an asshat. wtf?

wear a helmet.
at the interview? damn you are hardcore, i usually wait until the 3rd or 4th week before i start drinking on the job...

we seriously need to ban this stuff also.

if i am in my home country i shouldnt have to prove my identity. that should be done when leaving and coming back.
switching one intrusion for another doesnt sound like a good idea to me.
will i get fingerprinted if i ask for link?
