i think a lot of arguments boil down to morality and ethics, the rules be which we want society to function. we are all on this planet together, we need to get along. i know some people will take anything they are able to get. they just cant complain when they are on the receiving end. of the people i know who take what they can get, they are the first to complain about someone being rude or taking from them. if someone is going to create rules to live by, they cant complain when someone uses those same rules against them.

i dont think that way of thinking is morally correct. if i am willing to develop a product and ask to be paid for it, i should be paid. likewise, if i want to use something that someone requests payment for, i should pay. if i am unwilling to pay, then i dont need it. if you dont want to pay, dont use it.

ultimately i agree with you, in a way. i use some software that is free for personal use and costs for professional use. i think that is the best arrangement. it achieves the familiarity goal you mention, only in a way that is agreeable to all parties. i know i have recommended software to past employers that i am familiar with. though never an os. a lot of the software i use in a professional capacity dont work on every os anyway.

no, we just prefer to change their government to resemble ours so that said countries remain intact and start becoming invested in a global economy so that they have something to gain from positively engaging in the world. the more people invested the better. we arent any good at this.

But of course, we have been brainwashed into thinking that our country is somehow special, we are the God's chosen ones and when we want to wipe countries from the face of the earth it's "war against terrorism" when other countries want to wipe each other from the face of the earth it's "OMG! Teh terroristz!"
we are nothing special. we have the greatest stake in a stable global economy. excepting the last 75 years or so we did the best we could to stay out of things. in fact, washington recommended it when he left office. the problem is that other countries couldnt leave us alone. as a result we decieded we would police the world to try and keep it relatively stable and protect our interests. we are bad at this as well. it sucks to live here because no matter what we do, it isnt enough or the 'right thing'. it is like the bomb scare in boston. if something had happened it would have been those damn police who should have known better.

i would bet money that most child behavioral problems can be solved by playing with your kids and involving them in activities. my son (21 months) loves to help me clean up around the house, feed/give the dogs treats, etc. or just sit in my lap when i read. he reads his books at the same time.

back on topic. yeah, you can tell a kid to not do bad things online and they might still do it. but if parents go beyond the 'one talk' and actually participate in their kids lives, they might not have to go out and meet a 40 year old pervert. nothing in life is 100% but you can hedge your bets.
