but the cost to produce the dvd is the cost of running the entire operation edit: is not. i should always remember to proof anything over 5 words.

of course the markup is 100%. that's like the beginning of markups from distribution to retail, but say there was only one company generating that 27 billion in sales and say that they're markup to retail was 100%. That means the adjusted gross revunue is equal to half of 27 billion = 13.5 billion. but the cost to produce the dvd is the cost of running the entire operation. Usually 20% profit on revenues is a very healthy company, especially if you can keep that level over the long term. Now dvd makers have already invested in the capital and personnel to produce dvd for 27 billion in sales and now the've lost 4% of those sales. That means they lost all of that out of the profit. that's a 20% loss out of profit (4% being a fifth of 20%) assuming they were making 20% profit margin. Now the prices they charge for dvds cds are criminal so their markup could easily be 700-800% in which case you might be right about their specific profit margins, but you're average business would be incredibly happy with a 20% margin on a 100% markup.

That must be a pretty nice business you're owning there buddy.

come on. i'm no game historian but i'm pretty sure the entire catalogue for atari 2600 can't be that much bigger than the current xbox catalogue. Now if the point was that given 5 years with one console would developers learn to max out it's capabilities making even better games then you're probably right.

about the only way that'll work is if microsoft buys mac and every mac will run MS-OSXI(longhorned panther). Oh and the Dell G7 will run final cut pro like nobody's business.

This was obviously written as propoganda (i'm not saying that's a bad thing, forget you're preconceived notions about the word) for linux. someone who likes linux wrote it for all those windows users who know they hate microsoft (for reasons they're not sure about) and don't feel computer confident enough yet to switch to anything else. They will always use gaming as their number one excuse why not to switch. This is just another article trying to alleviate this concern.

Don't get me wrong, I like the CBC (well cbc radio is great and the tv is acceptable) but outside of that Canada's press is ridiculously unfree. The amount of control of the media exerted by Bell/Globemedia, Canwest/Global, Rogers Communications, and maybe three or four more companies (hollinger, gtc, shaw,etc...) that do business with those companies, is outrageous. They probably own close to 90% of the tv and radio stations, newspaper, ISPs, cable companies, and anything else in the whole country. That doesn't sound like a free press to me.

I'm sure all minorities everywhere thank you for your enlightened approach to suffering and what should be done about it... or not done since they are just unfortunate tendencies. I agree these things are unfortunate and we should devote every iota of our being to trying to create a society where they cannot happen because no one wants them to. Maybe then the rest of the world wouldn't laugh there asses off when America gets on it morally high horse and tries to "help" them be free.

that is exactly the point! Most PEOPLE would disagree, but that wouldn't make them right either. Just because the majority believes in something, doesn't make it right. Some people believe you shouldn't marry out of your own race; some believe you shouldn't marry out of your own gender; some people believe marriage should be between a man and as many women as he can get his hands on. Well, since there are government repercussions for becoming marriage, it is an institution that should be open to all. Call them whatever the fuck you like, they're all absent signifiers to me.

So you pick strong and rub the rest of the world's face in it the whole time. It is that exact attitude, not just the strong part that makes the rest of the world hate the US (myself not included). Instead of using strength for altruism or being the slightest bit helpful, the US attitude has always been look out for number one above all else. That means don't join any international organization you can't control or ignore and try to badger the rest of the world into your viewpoint. This works most of the time with cultures similar to your own but when it comes to the middle east or asia, basic American propoganda runs counter to their belief systems and those in charge haven't quite figured that out yet.

i've seen a lot of americans complaining about "liberal" (I don't understand the American usage of this word) judges overturning the laws enacted by the people they elected to govern them. This will give them yet another example to whine about. But what are they supposed to do when the laws that are created are in direct contradiction to the very basis of what America is supposed to be? If the only way that you can think to secure freedom is by decimating it, then maybe you don't deserve it.
