  1. acer 486sx on What Was Your First Computer? · · Score: 1

my first box was an Acer 486sx 25mhz running Windows 3.11 and MS DOS 6.22, with Doublespace/Drivespace installed and 16MB of RAM and 1MB of video card memory. that was around '93

  2. my 2 cents w/ JPOP stations (japanese pop music) on Internet Radio Failing to Find Support? · · Score: 1

online communities created by Japanese music fans are likely to put up & finance (using donations & advertising revenues) their own online radio station using the free SHOUTcast streaming platform from Nullsoft, the developers of Winamp. and for those who can't afford to pay for a streaming host, the availability of a broadband connection makes it easier for them to test the waters.

the majority of these stations are based in the US who's primary target audience are those from outside Japan. Unless you have administrator access to the live DNAS (SHOUTcast server) or statistics, you won't have the slightest clue as what the demographics are. Surprisingly, the bulk of listeners are coming from Japan and those responsible for maintaining the stations and live broadcast shows including DJ's are continually baffled; as to finding ways to accomodate additional slots for non-Japanese users without spending a fortune, afterall bandwidth is an expensive commodity. as a result, monetary & bandwidth donation jingles are often played.

but whether they're doing it for legitimate purposes or just for fun, it remains a topic to debate on.

yep, was fortunate to be one of the townships in Northern New Jersey to get it, 5th in my own! Speed has always been consistant as advertised. My only complaint is the disconnection for long-periods of FTP/rsync-based file transfers on both directions, from what I have seen. It must be a mechanism to prevent users from running servers of some sort. But as long as I can pipe everything on port 22, it's all good. :) Prior to that, I was with OOL (optimum online service) for a few years. It's an "ok" service if you're not a heavy file uploader. The quality of service degraded once I discovered & started using Gallery - http://gallery.sf.net/ - to manage my digital photos. both HTTP/ftp-based uploads got my connection capped with no detailed explanation provided other than "there are our policies, sir". Nuff' said. FIOS just simply, ROCKS. can't wait for IPTV, dhcp or static-ip to arrive for home users. :)

using a plugin called WPG2 written by Ozgreg, I use Gallery 2 exclusively both as a standalone and embedded in WordPress 1.5.x - works great. looking forward to the upcoming WordPress 1.6 souped up with Ajax. =) i strongly believe that these 2 powerful personal publishing platforms will one day become a standard package to be offered competitively by hosting providers. :) Gallery - http://gallery.sf.net/ WordPress - http://wordpress.org/ wpg2 plugin - http://wpg2.ozgreg.com/forums/

SecFilterSelective "THE_REQUEST" "xmlrpc\.php" "allow, log," you can also enable Apache's SetEnvIf & conditional logging to pipe all xmlrpc.php requests to a centralized log file for analysis.

  10. mass photo-uploading, OOL capped me. on 50Mbps Cable Launched on Long Island · · Score: 2, Insightful

i was an OOL customer for more than 4 years but when i started using gallery http://gallery.sf.net/ and uploaded massive amounts of family/personal pictures, they capped my speed to 400kbps. i got it uncapped twice then luckily, FIOS was deployed in my town - was one of the first 5 installations in Northern New Jersey. i switched. installation was free and i got a discount because of my existing calling plan with Verizon. FIOS works for me. i've uploaded gigs of photos with no problems. all i need is port 25, port 80 and port 22 (for SSH / ftp-tunneling) and i'm good to go. :)

both scripts are VERY easy to setup. ideally, you only need Apache's mod_rewrite, a mySQL account, lots of webspace and netPBM to get it up and running. altogether, the setup takes less than 5 minutes. but that's if you know what you're doing. read the docs.

patrons of #gallery and #wordpress on FREEnode got me curious of FireFox. so i decided to give it a try, this was a couple months ago. it was version .8 and lo and behold the download and install took less than 5 minutes. popup blocking and the Google bar are my favorite features.. along with tabbed-browsing, themes/extensions and its pal, ThunderBird. i've switched for good. imho, IE is good for Windows-tweaks and system updates, nothing more. all 4 computers in my house now all use FireFox and Thunderbird. upgrades were painless. highly recommended. using .10PR now. highlighted HTTPS address bar? search while you type? why didn't MS think of it first eh? :>
