  1. Re:question for /.ers on Sorting Through the Analog to Digital TV Mess · · Score: 1

A computer doesn't really count as a "Set-top box". It's far more complicated and expensive then a set-top box is designed to be. (Note: I'm probably going to build a living room PC this year, with one of those cards, so I can receive OTA DTV broadcasts).

There aren't many HDTV Tuners around. I remember going to the store and shopping for an analog set-top box in the late eighties-- the boxes cost around $50. Now it's $150 for a refurbished set-top box. I feel like I'm getting ripped off.

I've asked the guys at Good Guys, Circuit City, and Best Buy-- 90% of the salespeople told me I couldn't receive DTV over the air. That's the sort of ignorance some of us are running into.

American beer, for similar reasons, is best served in small glasses, and chilled to the extreme to kill the taste.

Bah, you haven't been to the US in quite a while or take it. Either that or you come to the US and drink Budweiser, Coors or some other crap. Don't DO that!

Many of our locally crafted beers are quite tasty, but are never shipped to Europe. I'm a big fan of the amber beers from the American West Coast (Mostly around Seattle, Portland and San Francisco)-- it's hard to get anything like that in Western Europe or the UK, although I've had some small batches of great amber brews in the Czech Republic and Austria.

And I'll admit that I've never been to Belgium.

I lived near some missle silos. While in Boy Scouts, we used to go to the military base and they would talk about the nuclear weapons program (among other things) and show us some of the non-commissioned, unarmed, unfueled missles. We got a 50-page book which tries to justify the US nuclear program-- pretty facinating book. It says the Soviets have 40,000 nuclear warheads-- I don't know if that was true or not, but it's an impressive number. And then they show the blast radius of a 1-megaton bomb over certain American cities, the threat posed by the mobile missle launching platforms on the back of a truck and train cars.

Some of the backers of ID are really just aiming to keep people uneducated and within control. Liberty will eventually win out-- the Catholics tried to control education and discourse 500 years ago, and they eventually lost. Hopefully the promoters won't get as violent as the Catholics did. Somehow I don't think that Jesus would approve of torture and burning people at the stake.
