So how was Cuba getting M$ products anyway with the US trade embargo? To quote GYWO,

"Remember when the US had a drug problem, and then we declared a War on Drugs, and now you can't buy drugs anymore? It'll be just like that!"

    Bad Cuba, bad commies!

  6. How very American... on Playing with Sony's Linux-Based Networked Media Player · · Score: 3, Interesting

Just when I was about to ask how Sony could charge nearly 2 grand for a device that uses an open-source OS, you had to go and pre-emptively answer my question. That's some hard-core video processing going on, tho I don't suppose it's all hardware... Mayhaps Sony has written a (closed) app for the video/audio mixing?

  7. a beneficial rest stop? on Firefox Growth Slowing? · · Score: 1
Perhaps this (apparent) growth plateau is good: If the other posts containing figures are roughly accurate, FF has about 7% of the 'market'. The number of users is great enough to allow Mozilla to more quickly find and fix bugs (more users statistically have a greater chance of finding bugs) while FF remains under the malware radar. Once FF has been more strongly tempered, the plateau may turn back into the slope observed earlier this year.

Sure, FF is getting lots of news (and equal amounts of hype) recently, so it will grow as a target for attacks, but 7% of the user space (at least half of which are keen to malware - the remainder being grandmas) is still too small a piece of the pie to be worth eating. And no, FF (or any other browser) will never be perfect, but as long as it offers the best features, then people will pick it up and run.

From the article, "Furthermore, DNA analysis shows that the changes were passed on genetically from one generation to the next, until they were no longer needed, thus confirming that the researchers had caught evolution in the act."

Yes, I agree. 100 years is too short to observe anything outside of microevolution (like species change). The article is a bit misleading in the end, but many ABC readers might be confused by 'microevolution'. I like this direction, and hopefully other places with hidden, static life will be found.

  11. win for dozers, *nix for u and i! on Linux Can't Kill Windows · · Score: 2, Interesting
The answer is, I think, obvious --- Linux is the OS designed by geeks, for geeks. It's the classic example of overengineering the wheel.

Yes, precisely. As 'easy' as apt and rpm are, installing things in Linux is still a mystery for many people. The idea of "there is no C:\ drive, Neo," usually brings out the glossed-over eyes as their mind crashes and displays the native blue screen of d3th.

Many Windows dependents are so jacked in that permissions and the file hierarchy of *nix are more than they will ever understand about computers. (people are still on the fence about switching to Firefox!)

But I like it that way! It keeps us enthusiasts shrowded in mystery. And what Americans (wait, I mean people in general) don't understand, they fear. Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain, he's only writing a shell script.

  12. Going the way of the buffalo... on Meetup.com Ends Free Meetups · · Score: 1
I use/used meetup.com. I found it very helpful to find some connections right after I moved to a new city. I even started a group, but after 8 months of one-man meetups, I figured out that folks in Shizuoka just don't Lindy Hop.

I also found the Tokyo LUGs with meetup, as the websites google found were way out of date.

My course is inaction. I wonder what will happen to a group whose organizer doesn't pay. How long before I get the boot? Will it be that far ahead of meetup's (seemingly inevitable) demise? At least my popular group won't be missed.
