That's all fine and dandy, but there is ONE sticking point that as an American taxpayer I demand:
My tax dollars go to american workers.
I don't care about efficiencies and cost savings. That money leaves our shores and never comes back. I want my tax dollars to pay for the guy next door to provide services so that he can buy groceries from my store so that I have money to...
You get the point. Our capital is being lost and "spreading the wealth" to developing nations... which is fine as long as I can still afford to feed my family and the city/state still has money to provide decent schooling, road repairs, firemen, etc.
Now, I also have a qualm about (rich) CEOs proclaiming the benefits of outsourcing. Of course they are. They're millionaires who see the value of their stock (and profit on options) go up when they "save" their company millions of dollars. What happens when people in the US (the richest market for tech products) can no longer afford to purchase luxury items by the companies that laid off their tech workers for Indian techies?
It's not just tech jobs. In New York City there was a huge uproar when a company won the contract to make firefighter uniforms was "exposed" for outsourcing the making of the uniforms to malaysia. New Yorkers demanded that contract go to one of the hundreds of garment factories within city limits that might not have had the lowest bid, but it kept the money LOCAL.

And always keep in mind how much the job is worth to you vs. how much you are worth the company.
I once fought for the same raise numbers (same exact numbers) and felt that I was worth every penny of that raise. I got the raise because the company saw my utilization rate, the quality of my deliverables, and my repoire w/ client contacts.
Do the same analysis of your own work. If you feel you are worth every penny to them and that if they got rid of you they'd be hard-pressed to find someone with your skills (and cheery smile) for the same price (or maybe even less), go for it.
It never hurts to ask. Just be prepared to hear "no".
Please explain to me how the company you say you own makes profit yet you are not taxed on that profit?
Last time I checked, all profit your company makes is taxable. Since you own the company or own % of the company, you are being taxed on that profit regardless of whether you draw money from the coffers.
When you fill out your tax returns (for you AND your company), you have to declare a K-1 which is your obligations on the profit your company made REGARDLESS of whether that money was distributed to you or not.
When you incorporate a company, you are listed as the owner of the company. When your company earns revenue, YOU are the ultimate recipient of that money, regardless of whether it is distributed to you or now. It's not referred to as a salary but instead a "draw" against the profits of the company.
Something that also doesn't work but that lots of people think does: working for "free" for a company in exchange for future equity.
The general misconception is that payment is in the form of cash in your hand. It's not. Payment is barter, future equity, unclaimed profits... anything.
I don't understand why this comment is insightful.
If the company is having problem and your executives want to at least make the appearance of listening to the IT staff, step up to the plate and tell them.
The trick is to tell them in a constructive method that doesn't cloud their opinion of you or your coworkers. Don't get fanatical about converting all of the company's computers to Linux. Don't blame Jo Marketer for unleashing the last worm on the network. Don't scream bloody murder about Amy Saleswoman for promising features that are impossible to build for thousands of reasons, none of which the execs would understand (especially while you're all drunk!)
Keep it constructive. Give them facts and ideas in a friendly manner without looking like a zealot. If you get a good vibe, follow up with an email the next day.
Oh, and a good way to get something done is to make the exec think that the great idea YOU had is the idea THEY had but never verbalized. You brag about how deep the Force runs within you... use some jedi mind tricks!
I'm not going to go to watch a stupid movie when it costs $20 without food/drinks for me and my woman ($35 if you get 2 tickets, 2 drinks, and a box of popcorn in NYC)
I'm not going to buy a cd when it costs $15+ for a cd of 8 tracks, 6 of which suck
I'm not going to listen to the radio since all of the radio stations I get are the same 30 songs in rotation, some at the same time
You know what I'm going to do? Pick up a book and go to the park. At least the view is nice (still warm enough for women in skimpy clothes) and there are still decent books to be read
I thought the purpose of the computer in the classroom back in the day was so that we'd learn what was necessary to go from Philadelphia -> California via the Oregon Trail, how to effectively run a Lemonade stand so as to become a millionaire by the age of 12, and what big ass fish can eat other fish in the lake down the hill.
yea, that's right. they should blame the poor movie ticket sales on the people pirating the movie on DVDs in chinatown. then they should blame people trading the movie online using services like Kazaa and Morpheus. then they should blame the economy. then they should blame Angelina Jolie for getting older and not having the same sex appeal.
all in all, they should blame everyone 'cept themselves and their god-awful movies that just suck.
Are we all supposed to identify w/ the submitter because we, as a group of self-proclaimed nerds, should have poor dental hygeine from too much coffee and poor consideration of our health?
Someone please, explain to me why this was posted?
destined for ineptness? All the guy wanted to do was create his own little forum from scratch.
an in that case, PHP/mySQL was the natural choice.
So now, just because PHP/mySQL was his first language/database, and because learning from function references where obviously too high-level for him, your suggestion would be to tell him to learn other languages first (C), then come back in 6 months and try to make his own site.
php.net and other online docs are only good if you know what you're looking for.
I recently recommended this book to a friend who was tackling programming for the first time. I think it's fair to say he's learning pretty quickly from the book, and learning what questions to ask so that he can go and search the online docs.
The reverse applies as well for the rest of the family:
just because you're in your home doesn't mean you're "at home". You are not available to do the dishes, do the laundry, go get groceries, etc. during business hours.
While this might make sense to you, make sure you explain this to the rest of your family early on and stick to it.

Nice try, but it doesn't work that way.

i think you really need to convince your client to move their server out of the hallway closet and into a hosting facility...
;)
the server loses power? people knocking out the power cords? i really hope this isn't a mission critical system
