  1. REAL sub $600 gaming rig on How to Build a $500 Gaming Machine · · Score: 2, Interesting

    AMD Semperon 3000/ECS NFORCE3 A combo: Fry's %80
    Western Digital ATA133 80 GB HDD: Fry's $50
    1 GB OCZ DDR400 RAM [2X512]: Fry's $100
Sony 16x DVDRW Dual Drive: Walmart $70
    Samsung DVDROM 16X OEM: Micro-Center $20
    Diamond/Stealth ATI Radeon 9550 256MB DDR: Micro-Center $65 [easy to overclock]
    Turtle Beach Catalina 7.1 Soundcard: Fry's $35
MGE M1 Gamer Case with 450W Power Supply: Micro-Center $50
    2X CoolerMaster Case Fans: Micro-Center $10
    Antec Slot Fan/Blower: Micro-Center $5
Windows XP Home Upgrade: Wal-Mart $89 [All you need is an old Windows 9x/ME/NT or system restore disc to use as full]

After tax, a tiny bit under $600, not cheaping out on anything [this system has a good burner, a real sound card good for gaming and HT, twice the amount of RAM dual channel at that, and happens to have a case and proper cooling, 0h, and a legal operating system] If you bought all these parts online or ebay, I'm sure you could do even less than what I did.

And Tom didn't even count in shipping or tax..loser. Someone could counter his system "performs better", but I seriously think the difference in performance would be very marginal, with twice the system and video ram, less intergrated parts, and better though cheap cooling.

  2. Re:God, music is dead. on The Death of the Music CD · · Score: 1

But you see, that's the thing, I could buy that U2 collection from Itunes and have all their material in a few hours, on my computer... But then I think about a few months ago, browsing through a thrift store, and finding a copy of Hasta La Vista Live In Mexico City and some of the Japanese singles. I think about buying U2's official US albums one by one, starting with my first one at the tender age of 13 [U2's War] That box set, as convenient as it would be to have the complete U2 in digital format, could never bring any real fan the excitement of actually buying the music

  3. God, music is dead. on The Death of the Music CD · · Score: 1

And digital media is killing it. I just cry at the thought of a world without tapes, CDs, and DVDs.

Liner notes, cover arts, inserts, mini posters, lyrics books, pictures of the artists, CD label design, the excitement of a boxset or a double album, all GONE?!

It's almost scary, a world where everything would become theoretical. We'd hear the music but we wouldn't see it. We'd know we have it, but there'd be nothing to remind us of such.

What's next? They'll take our instruments? They'll get rid of sheet music? And burn music theory books? Well they won't be taking away my piano and my sheet music at all..I'll be playing Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and Hilary Duff til I die...and no dead English men or cute blondes are going to be in my way...

  4. Re:as the de facto sysadmin of my family... on Gartner Says it's a 2-Browser World · · Score: 1

And this is what startles me. It comes to the point that you would lie to your parents and tell them Internet Explorer doesn't even exist, because you believe Firefox to be the superior browser.

Why is it wrong for Microsoft to create a monopoly, yet you won't even let them know that Internet Explorer does exist and is an alternative to Firefox as Firefox is an alternative to Internet Explorer.

Even the most hardcore Linux users would think a world with only one OS [even if it was their favorite distro] would be a VERY bad thing...

  5. Ugh on Why Does Windows Still Suck? · · Score: 1

How in the world does a computer get messed up 4 minutes after using it? What kind of sites did she try to visit? She surely didn't get her entire system halted by going on google or Yahoo? Either she went to some freaky porn site, an off shore warez site, or some messed up song lyric archive.

And more than anything, why would someone in IT be so foolish? You don't need to install the provider's software to get a connection, just let Windows autodetect the network on install, even the preconfig brand name machines do this when you go through registration and first boot.

Second, visit nothing but secure sites before updating. Limit to google, your mail provider, and if you must, stuff like ebay, imdb, gamefaqs, slashdot, fark. If you really cared though, you'd disable the net connection and first configure windows right

That means: services modifications, windows component add/remove, uninstalling any and all programs you don't need, going through each control panel and setting it up all right, disabling ALL power features, system restore, error reporting, and setting the page file to a static size, and for the sake of performance, stream line the entire interface to windows classic with no visual enhancements and small icons with no text.

Then after all that, you go to Windows update, install every single update there is, that means SP1, SP2, and everything else that goes with it, as well as the IE6 service packs, the OFFICE ones if you have OFFICE, and the latest DirectX. Then you look around the Microsoft website and download TweakUI, and further customize the settings. Also, fully update all drivers for all hardware to the most stable version

Afterwards, once you make sure your system is fully configured, completely updated, you install all the applications you might need, making sure to custom install each one, then you reboot, run from safemode, do a full virus scan, and full spyware/adware scans. Reboot again, run from command line, run check/scandisk, then go into safemode again, and defragment the entire disk

Then, be happy, and use your computer. Run the spyware/adware checkers and virus scan about twice a week, use your computer right, and enjoy..this is what I've done ever since I started with Windows, and I haven't hard one problem...and the performance is top of the line

And those of you who like Firefox and use a third party firewall or have an actual hardware firewall will have even MORE security....

I always post the same thing, but a fully tweaked and configured Windows XP is probably the best operating system we'll see until Microsoft gets it straight or there's a Linux truly ready for the consumer market [and no, it's not macosx]

  6. Okay, I need to come out and say this.. on Bad Science Awards · · Score: 2, Informative

My uncle has AIDS. He's known for two years. The doctors wanted to put him on HIV medications as soon as they knew.

He said no. He urged me, my family, to research every possible medicine [both mainstream and alternative] for AIDS

And we came up with a mix of different therapies.

    MGN3
    Immunofin
    Colostrum
    CCA30
    Chlorophyll

We added a potent multivitamin, a specialized diet, as well exercise, meditation, and accupuncture.

He also quit smoking, stopped drinking, took up religion, and went back to school [he already had two degrees, one in accounting and one in computer science, now he's studying economics and law[

The doctors that he has seen are pretty much amazed. They count his viral load, check for other opportunistic infections and diseases, and do all sorts of tests, everything comes out great.

He feels wonderful, has very few symptoms, and happens to feel his health is greater than before he found out.

One of his friends, also with AIDS, is dead. He was on drug cocktail for one year and a half, he died in a hospital with a drip of AZT going.

However, I doubt this is what they are sending to Africa. The diet is one of the most important parts of the treatment. The supplements are expensive [bottles of CCA and Immunofin, etc, can run around $50 each] and some of the supplments you really have to search around for [example, MGN3 was banned by the government, no longer in production]

Of course, I know lots of you "Science geeks" will laugh and say it's a lie, but you'll start seeing nutrition and natural remedies coming back a lot in this drug society..

  7. But this is what I want to know? on Penn State Tells Students To Ditch IE · · Score: 1

Can you manage group policies with Firefox? I think it's impossible to do group policies, system wide updates, and user restrictions on a server level with firefox, unless there's a new application or tool to do it.

Penn is just making up for a useless group of admins who don't know how to take care of their machines.

That, or are too lazy to do some real work.

  8. Really to me, pointless on The Perfect Online Music Store? · · Score: 1

If you look at the list of releases this week, you'll find most of them cost $7.99 - $9.99. One example is Hilary Duff's release this week. It is 17 tracks total, for $9.99. ITunes has each song for 99 cents, costing $17 to download in ONE format without photos, lyric books, hard copy, or CD case. Anyways, music stores serve no point because I mostly listen to Spanish and Japanese music. Most stores don't offer imported music, so buying the album is a must..
