If you want manufacturing and jobs to 'come back' to the US, how about we stop penalizing US operations AND stop rewarding off-shore manufacturing (e.g. China = 'Most favored trading partner')???
"As a first distro, where you want everything to just work first time, I can readily recommend Linux Mint." - Are you kidding me? I DL'd the latest Linux Mint (XFCE) version and installed it on my Father-in-law's computer. Grief right from the beginning with it partitioning, then not wanting to install to the partition then more headaches from there.
The pollution and energy consumption required to manufacture the new cars out weighed the pollution and energy savings of using the old cars throughout their useful life.
That's not true.... If we don't go back to Standard Time, we will be permanently out of sync with the rest of the world's time zones. This will cause effort to someone, some time, somewhere...
I agree! Get rid of it but for GOD SAKE, DON'T ADOPT IT AND CALL IT STANDARD TIME!!!
Leave it to a politician.... The time zones are set.... Don't throw the US permanently out of sync with the rest of system. If you REALLY want that extra hour, CHANGE YOUR BUSINESS HOURS!!!!!!
If government and schools changed their business hours to 9-6, private businesses would follow until 9-6 would become the new standard.
"Germany (much like Spain) had a chronic unemployment problem, a result of a labor market that was too highly regulated and offered too much protection for workers. German policymakers began to change the system back in 2003 with a series of measures that made the labor market more flexible and encouraged greater participation in the workforce." "Germany is making BMWs, not Chevys. If you’re making a BMW and charging so much for it, you can manufacture in a high-cost environment and still make a nifty profit. If you’re making a Chevy, which to a greater degree competes on price and doesn’t have a strong brand reputation" TRANSLATION: They manufacture high-profit margin stuff.
"German management also just seems more determined to find ways of staying profitable while still manufacturing in Germany. The chairman of power-tool maker Stihl, Bertram Kandziora, told me that U.S. companies “don’t try hard enough to keep production inside the country.”" TRANSLATION: Germans try NOT to reward offshoring.
Soooo, you're saying that companies are having a hard time setting up manufacturing operations inside a country that is very hostile to domestic companies, domestic manufacturing, and encourages moving jobs overseas with things like "most favored trading partners" and "free trade treaties"!?!?!

The pollution and energy consumption required to manufacture the new cars out weighed the pollution and energy savings of using the old cars throughout their useful life.
