How often is ports updated? Is it like Debian stable where you never get a new version of something like Apache? Or does ports get updated fairly regularly? I ask because as much as I like running Debian on my servers I really hate not getting recent releases of Apache/PHP/etc... My mail server actually runs FreeBSD at the moment but it's an ancient version and the machine is too slow for a cvsup (48mb ram, cyrix p150+, 8gb IDE ata33 drives, it grinds). I've got a way faster replacement and I'm just getting ready to go the Debian route with it but...
(and before anyone says I'm reckless for running recent releases of apache/php/etc on my server - it's for my own use)
I have bought a few distros on the past Debian $25 and slack $45, however I'm on an extremely fixed income and can't afford too much.
Well this is getting off topic but I do have some suggestions:
- make friends with someone who has a broadband connection
- join a user group (often you can get burned CDs for the cost of the media, a buck or two)
- look into using boot images that download only the information you want over the net (for example I found a 24mb Debian ISO image that had just enough information to boot the machine and install the base system, for other even easier systems look at OpenBSD or FreeBSD ftp install floppies)
- find a cheap supplier of burned CDs (cheapbytes.com, etc)
There really is no reason to pay a lot for a distribution (unless you are doing so to support the project). Lots of options out there...
I just compiled the mosfet theme w/ kde 2.2 and the style and color choice aren't showing up in the control center:(... Plain jane debian unstable install. Any tricks to get it going?
And to stay on topic also - perhaps this mosfet theme will end up on themes.org soon:). Can't wait to browse an up to date KDE2 section on themes.org,
For mirrors. You get the MD5 (AFAIR, 128bits, conceiveably double that when including the filename;-) from the "official" site and use it to verify that the bins on the mirror haven't been altered.
And ideally when/. posts stories like this they could include the MD5 in with the story. Of course you'd have to trust/. though:).

Despite what some (very misleading) news articles have recently reported, the retail version of Tux Racer will be released for both Linux and Windows (and most likely the Macintosh); the binaries for all versions will be on the same CD. Don't believe the hype!
These news articles are referring to an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) deal which is in the works, which (although the details have not been finalized) is for Windows only.
I've been waiting for a decent reply to your post but none so far... Banjo appears to be a newer version of Slashcode (perhaps 2.0 or 2.2?). There are some notes in CVS logs for slashcode that mention Banjo.
There is a guy on eBay selling 100's of old (but unused so new) ISAPCMCIA adapters for $24 plus $8 shipping (flat shipping so $8 for 1 or more). Or buy the same adapter used from pcliquidators for $19.95 plus reasonable shipping.
I'm with you. I've got 6 domains with them. When I set up my initial domain I emailed them requesting a setup for a name server at my ip address. They took care of everything quickly. Very happy. If you plan on buying more than ten domains you should consider going to OpenSRS.com.

If you were doing it responsibly, IE, leaving a mix of old and new growth standing and truly planting as much as you were cutting down, then yes, it would be okay.
I really wonder whether that works in the rainforest. From all the PBS shows I've seen the rainforest looks a lot more dense than regular forests (like those in US). The canopy of trees blocking the sunlight ensures that no other foilage will be able to overtake the trees. Removing some trees will break the canopy. I'm sure trees die on a regular basis but knowing that one needs a path to remove the trees it would seem that harvesting them would have worse affects on the rainforest.
It was a good troll until this part:
You may wonder why I know this. Let's just say I have inside knowledge of Intel products.:-)

I think selectspec was thinking more of a map that could be clicked on and enlarged. Kind of like that 3d global map that Hiro had in Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash. I can't be the only one who read about it there and paused to imagine the possibilities! Holding something like that in your palm would be simply awesome. It even had the weather system represented (if I recall correctly).
It uses GRASS along with GMT, iGMT, gmap, mapserver, MapIt!, gpsman, etc... Basically appears to be a distribution of all the mapping/gps stuff and some data. You can go download everything seperately. You can't download thier ISO image.
gpsd supports the DeLorme Earthmate. I tried to go to the gpsd homepage via freshmeat but it appears to have moved. Probably quicker to just grab the tar.gz or apt-get it and read the docs.
Thanks Jeremy. Exactly what I needed to know

Wow! It sounds like it can do anything.

So, uh, what did you do to exercise your arm in order to crank Bono hard when it was manually driven?

Doh! I agree with you though. I looked at least twice for the mirrors list and nothing... The navigation interface is pretty bad.
