To individual users I doubt they care much, but there is something to be said for honoring the license that a software author has chosen to use.

If everyone just ignores the licenses then why are there things like the GPL at all?

Well, the older license still applies to what you have installed. Anyone buying OS X today will get Lion. The Lion license cleans up the silly language around labeling quite a bit and also makes provisions for virtualization.

The safety language in licenses is there specifically to stop someone from trying to run a life-support, nuclear plant safety, or avionics system using a consumer OS. It's not about what platform doctors use to search the web.

I don't think that a lot of doctors are running life support systems on OS X or that pilots are reprograming their avionics systems to use it.

To them, all the "freemium" apps are great since they get to try a whole bunch of options.

Actually it takes place in the ancient past. That opening title card of "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away" is one of the more inspired bits of filmmaking I know of. It's the beginning of a campfire story, it brings you in and starts the suspension of belief right away.

Of course Lucas pisses all over this in Empire when it's pointed out that the characters are humans. At least he waited until the second film.

Mac OS X Server before it, and now OS X Lion Server aren't intended for enterprise IT, and haven't been for a while. Apple has been working the word enterprise out of the marketing pages for a while now.

Indeed, the current blurb says this on apple.com: "OS X Lion Server gives you everything you need to provide workgroup and Internet services.".

For workgroup and SMB sized applications it's pretty nice, but a bit of a quandary when you hit the big leagues.

I put all my thoughts on it in my review on AFP548.com: http://www.afp548.com/article.php?story=lion-server-review

The real place in enterprise for the Mac has been in on the client side for quite some time now.

The current issue with doing ASR or NetRestore with Lion is that unless you've run the installer once you won't have a Recovery HD partition. Without that you can't access features like the FDE.

No need to hack a Lion NetInstall, just download SIU for Lion and make your .nbi set. Then upload it to your existing NetBoot server. Done.
