Wow computers can learn like the rest of us now...
This is a HUGE step in AI. A computer that can learn languages would perhaps allow interpretation devices to be created, and ultimately could lead to C-3po. The next step would be to make a computer learn spoken languages. This is a much more difficult task due to the complexity of sound waves, but I am sure that this is not far away.
Guessing is as good as anything...
Conflict of Interest: Two men, whose family and business associates and friends have extensive investments in global oil businesses, are president and vice-president of the entire U.S. government.
Using dishonest means, these men convinced U.S. taxpayers to pay for killing people in Iraq. What has been accomplished there? The killing under Saddam was less than the killing under George Bush.
One thing that has been accomplished, however, is that the profit from oil contracts involving Iraq has been shifted from Saddam to U.S. companies. This was accomplished while minimizing the support for U.S. troops.
I don't see how that comment has anything to do with adware... A guy that worked for an internet company that used adware gets to be on a homeland security board... How is that corrupt? The guy knows a lot about the internet and internet advertising. He could definitely provide insight into more malicious forms of web advertising. Maybe people should look at both sides of an issue before accusing the current administration of various misdeeds and acts of tyranny.
"These dollars don't make cents to me no more"
How can one poor little country in Asia make the entire world quiver and quake in fear? The answer is simple... just ignore the rest of the world and don't cooperate. There is no worries about sanctions or anything... the entire economic output is for the military anyways. Don't worry about starving people, the military will prevent any rebellions. Don't worry about foreign policy, it doesn't matter if people don't like you because they are all pacifists that won't do anything. They won't enforce sanctions or treaties, won't take any effective actions, and instead, they will point fingers at each other and blame the current administration of their countries. I applaud North Korea for exposing a major flaw in the modern international political system. Bravo.
What a surprise... A country that, instead of helping its own people, puts much of its resources towards military, develops nuclear weapons. We are all shocked at this. George W adopted a hard line stance towards them because they backed out on the treaty. His stance was not effective enough. Perhaps if the rest of the world would have stood by him, then something could have been done. At any rate, hey were not held responsible by the rest of the world. This neglect to enforce treaties is just the thing that will tear the UN apart and make it as effective as the League of Nations. North Korea attaining nuclear weapons exposes the larger problem of the lack of treaty enforcement by modern democracies... just so the current leaders can get reelected.
No because the shuttle costs about the same as the Soyuz. Any competition here is healthy. The antiquated space shuttle can not continue to be the backbone of NASA. It is old and expensive. A newer, cheaper, option is a necessary next step.
The soyuz costs on average $40 million per launch. This is not what NASA is charged, NASA is charged more than this. Bigelow aerospace hopes to take advantage of this. NASA currently depends almost entirely on the Soyuz. If a private sector competitor can lower the cost to about 25 to 30 million, then a huge step can be made. NASA will have another option, which will drive the price of the Soyuz down. Nothing like a little competition...
I drove through Northern Nevada by the prison where the Coal Power plant is. An entire valley had a cloud of black smoke over top of it. It was utterly disgusting.
What does coal power have to do with Nuclear power? I was saying that Nuclear power is a much better solution than coal or hydro.
Hydro can not be considered green. Hydro power displaces ecosystems, changes environments, slows rivers down, etc. There are many environmental problems with hydroelectric power. Nuclear is actually a more viable green solution if the waste products are kept onsite in sufficient containment and the waste water is allowed to cool first.
The color management is sub-par. Whereas adobe provides adobe gamma to correctly configure a monitor to display an image correctly, the GIMP provides no such tool.
I work for the Michigan Daily, and I have had experience using linux with my photo equipment. I use all digital cameras, a nikon d2h and a nikon d70. The problem with linux is the photo manipulation software. Currently the gimp is only 8 bit color. The color features of the gimp leave a lot to be desired for a photog. A must have is a mac or pc with photoshop. The linux platform is making steps, but currently there are too many problems.
Though this is an interesting idea, there are many obstacles. The camera would have to have extremely good resolution in order to see an animal that is more than a few feet away. The camera and gun would have to be sighted quite well. Also, who would track the animal down, and do the dirty work? Who would reload the gun? This simply has too many problems to be effective. Also, part of hunting is being outside in the fresh air. Staring at a computer screen would not give nearly the same effect, especially if the camera is low resolution. If you want to kill animals from a computer, play a deer hunting computer game.
Get students to do your artwork for free or near-free. Many high-school or college students have impressive skills with CG art. Go to the local high school and see if there are any stand out students.
I would like to claim to be the vice-king of the pirates. My eventualy goal is to steal every piece of digitalized media ever made. So far I have 0, but thats not whats important. What is important is the effort (the thought that counts).
Yes, of course you know what is best for the military. Your first hand experience has served you well. You have spent your whole life in the military and know all about the current state of technology. You know for SURE that they do everything inefficiently. You also know for SURE that this project will be over budget and take way too long, and will be obsolete when completed. Well my question then is: Should the military do nothing?
Couldn't they better spend their money on philanthropy or something? It's not as if they are going to win the election by doing this. They are wasting time and money. John Kerry is behind by a lot in Ohio, and he has already conceded. A recount will not change that many votes. It did not in Florida last election, and it won't in Ohio now.
You are misinformed. Yes, I realize that the US is attacking Al Qaida but they did not replace "Russia" as a threat. There is a huge difference between Russia and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Please do your history. Also, Al Qaida and its fellow terrorist organizations are a valid threat. They are potentailly the most dangerous threat in the world today. The current world political system is stable, with a large hegemony on top. The only real threat is a target that has no defined point to attack. The fear is that Al Qaida will develop into independant cells that do not depend on other cells for resources to operate. This will be horrible for the US because these cells can operate anywhere in the world. Al Qaida also has shown that they can affect the elections (Spain), and the target of the greatest power in world history (US attacking Afghanistan). If the US attacking Afghanistan with large, worldwide support is a mistake or an example of attacking an illegitimate threat, then say so. At least back this up with evidence and reason though. I am referring to the work of distinguished political scientists such as Bruce Bueno de Mesquita and James Morrow. You are referring to Michael Moore and Pearl Jam, 2 huge intellectual powerhouse college grads... Please continue your bitterness. It is amusing.
If you are referring to the "War Against Terror" as saying that it does not exist, then you should be ashamed of yourself. Terror is a major threat that has been around for hundreds of years. 9/11 was the biggest terrorist attack in recent history. Those responsible (Al Qaida) are a large, coherent, independant group with clear motivations. There is defineately a war on terror. Next, I will address your point about destroying satellites. Perhaps that is not the ultimate goal of space based weapons. Perhaps the ultimate goal of space based weapons is to be able to attack targets on the ground with high precision and little cost. Remember that by definition, doctrine must never stagnate, and so the doctrine currently posted by the USAF is simply the first step. Please stop contradicting yourself.
"justify it with fear ("The enemy is everywhere"), "
What is that supposed to mean? The media is responsible for creating the fear and justifying the spending, not the government. As was evident in the last election, many people see that Terror is a legitimate threat.
China is not an enemy of the United States. There is currently a trend away from major powers fighting. The Soviet Union is an example. A bi-polar system is inherently more stable than a multi-polar international system. The current trend is towards terrorist organizations such as Al Qaida that are highly organized, independant, and very spread out. Fighting these terrorists only gets more difficult. Once they are identified, troops must be sent in, and by the time the troops arrive, all the terrorists are gone. An instantaneous, precise, space based weapon would have amazing implications in the terrorist fighting business. If the terrorists can instantly be eradicated(laser) or immobilized (microwave weapons), then warfare will be revolutionized once more.
There is no question that modern nuclear reactors are safe, reliable, and efficient. The only reason that they are not more prevelant is the concern from uninformed people about the dangers associated with them. These dangers are largely nothing. A nuclear reactor is even something that could be used for batteries in a small electronic device. Only a small amount of fissile material is necessary for a nuclear battery. http://www.petroleumworld.com/Lag102204.htm
The Patriot Act, signed during a time of a National Crisis, has worked quite well. In the time since 9/11, there has not been a major terrorist attack. Is this Act still necessary? I am not sure. I am only sure of the fact that it has succeeded in it's goals. I did have to wait in line at the airport a little bit longer to get back to the United States after visiting Germany, but the inconvenience is worth the increased security.
Nikon or Canon should make a DSLR that has a 20 or 40 gig hard drive built in. They should also have compactflash cards of course, but a hard drive would be much faster to write to than a CF card, and for trips a hard drive would be unmatched.
