Because choice is good! Hypothetically, lets say SCO have an actual case (I know, but hypothetically!). Isn't it better that if, for some reason the Linux kernel is no longer an option due to patents etc, there is another GNU system ready to switch to?
Lugradio has an interview with Alan Cox in the latest episode (28th March) where he talks about being a kernel hacker, DRM, and how Linux doesn't need Linus.
Most of the big ISPs in the UK supply these horrible usb modems for their ADSL service, leaving the only protection being the Windows firewall.
I've had to sort out several PCs from friends and family that were brand new, but shipped with XP SP1 and pwned within minutes of plugging these modems in.
Contrast this to when I lived in Holland - adsl routers with NAT always supplied or recommended.
