  1. HL2 Custom Maps on Winning Half-Life 2 User-Created Deathmatch Maps · · Score: 5, Interesting

One of the best custom maps I've played is the WTC level from Singe. If you are a HL2:DM player, I recommend finding a server hosting it.

  2. Why stop at AoE? on Revisionist History in Age of Empires · · Score: 2, Funny

I suggest we bring Doom to task for their abuse of the known laws of physics in building a game around an interdimensional portal on Mars. Also, Madden 2004 allowed me to trade Randy Moss to the Cincinatti Bengals and win the Super Bowl, yet we know this didn't happen. This is a friggin' outrage!

When are we going to wake up and realize that everyone else must do a better job of raising my children?

  3. Re:yea it happens. on Recovering Domains from Negligent Registrars? · · Score: 1, Informative

Every experience I had with Network Solutions was negative. At least it was possible to get a person the telephone, but they were quite unhelpful. I was told to fax forms repeatedly because no on ever logged them into their system. Changing contact information was darn near impossible.

Several years ago, a local web developer accepted money from many small businesses for hosting and development then skipped town. I tried to help a few recover their domain names but all gave up after a while because it simply wasn't worth the effort and cost. I did manage to change contact data on the domain of the hospital where I worked several years ago, but that took over a month.

Learning from my mistakes, I went to Registar.com for my next round of domains. Everything went smoothly and I was happy with the support. Then, just as my registrations were about to expire, I got letters from Network Solutions thanking me for transferring the domains to them. I certainly had not requested any such move and couldn't get anyone at either registrar to explain how this happened. By this time the domains had expired so I couldn't transfer them anywhere else without paying Network Solutions to register them. Did I mention how much I hate those guys?

  5. Re:BSD? on DragonFlyBSD 1.2 Released · · Score: 0

I found myself in a similar position only a few weeks ago. I hadn't installed linux since Red Hat 6.x, so I had been out of the loop for a while. I started with Fedora but realized that my old box is not Fedora material :) I ended up installing FreeBSD and it went smoothly. I ftped the boot disk images then installed the OS via ftp. I then added and configured KDE and few other apps. All told, installation took less than two hours, plus another hour or two in download time.

I'm running my install on a PII 300 with somewhere under 256 mb of RAM. The only unresolved problem so far is getting sound to work in KDE. I think my next project is turning this box into a firewall/router, so we'll see how that goes.

  6. Re:Wrong Focus on Half-Life 2 - Aftermath · · Score: 0

I have mixed feelings about some aspects of Steam (e.g. the inability to play offline and the need to run another app in order to play a resource-intensive game) but I like the distribution method compared to what the other distributors are doing now. My license tells me that I have the right to make a backup copy of Gothic II but I've been unable to defeat the particular copy protection Atari used on it. When I scratch or lose my CD, I'm SOL. Steam lets me download HL2 as many times as I want. Sure, I worry that there will be an end to this, but that's okay as long as it is a reasonable number of years.

Why in the world don't I get a say in whether my game on my hard drive get patched or not? And why in hell would Steam throw a hissy fit if I decide to mess with game files -- again, my game files on my hard drive?

The problem is that you don't own this game. You have been granted a license to play the game. I don't like this but, until the courts rule otherwise, you own nothing but a revokable right to play. I don't disagree with your wants, but such is not the reality of our system. Yes, a CD in your hand and no need for Internet connectivity makes it tougher for a publisher to exercise its right to revoke your ability to use their property. But make no mistakes - Steam's success has helped guarantee the future of this delivery method.

I get sick in 30 seconds if I read in a moving vehicle (even reading a map will get me sometimes!). Yet, I've never found a game that causes me nausea. I sometimes had trouble effectively controlling that damn boat, but HL2 never got me sick.

My biggest problem is dry eye. Single player games usually don't bother me but multiplayer (like UT and HL2 Deathmatch) make my eyes crack and fall on my desk in pieces. I guess I forget to blink :)
