Come on, ringtones as we know them are passé, dead. Very soon, all new phones will just play any song/sound file (mp3, aac, wma...ugh) same as your iTunes or Mediaplayer. No more buying ringtones from phone companies. As soon as "air bandwith" is high enough, phone companies will be selling mp3/aac/wma songs just as any online music store.
A number of train companies (Switzerland, Germany,...) now offer mobile phone-free compartments. Maybe there will be a mobile phone-free business class section?
In fact you can with the latest iPod SW updates. You can listen to audiobooks at slow, normal or fast speed. If you want to do that with a song, you need to change the extension to the one for audiobooks. See comments above for details.
I don't rent. Hell I can't even buy at iTMS, being in isolated Switzerland.
However your argument of listening to a few songs in heavy rotation for a while, and then going on to new stuff actually validates the subscription business model. For the price of one CD, I could listen to the songs until I'm sick of them and then move on. If in one year's time I want to listen to the songs again, they are there.
How many people have CDs which they never listen to again? I have a bunch of these.
I think Apple should offer both options. Subscription is a great way to test new music. If I then like it so much I want to own it, I should be able to get a rebate on the purchase if I'm on a subscription scheme.
This is one of the arguments for p2p: people discover music and then buy it for good karma; if it is easy and cheap enough.
Yesterday I found a reason for wanting an iPod photo. About 30 minutes before leaving home, I decided to create and burn a few slideshows to DVD so that my parents could see the latest kids photos on their widescreen TV. The creative part was easy: choosing which digital photo albums, which transitions, the length between each slide and which tune to play with each of the 9 slide shows and the general theme of the dvd with background picture and music. All on my Mac of course. But then the encoding of the DVD started and didn't finish in time to take with me. Had I had an iPod photo, I could have just taken it with me and hooked it up to the TV.
Imagine the iPod sitting in the new Bose Sounddock hanging from a wall of your living room. Lights are dimmed, The colour screen of the ipod is showing the album art of the song playing. Cool. Ok , so at 12 feet away, you're not going to see much except different colours on the display.
What I'm missing is visualizer doing its stuff when I'm playing a song on the iPod Photo. That would be awesome!
To change an organisation, you need to be part of it. Also membership gives you "inside" information, instead of having to rely on third parties to keep informed.
You probably wouldn't be surprised to learn to what extent lawyers can change the laws of physics! Houdini was nothing compared to their act.
If it looks like a hamburger and tastes like a hamburger, it is a hamburger. So Apple is selling a music product online. It is "made" i.e. formatted and stored, then delivered in one unit. Physical delivery is by internet. The medium is a data file. The only difference is that it is not delivered as a solid state medium. How much does this count for?
I think Apple corps has a possible case, although I hope not!

But the future dad sitting in front of you who is desperately trying to get through to his highly pregnant wife would probably not appreciate

Ok you knew this cheap joke was going to be posted by some nitwit: iBook and Powerbook.

Probably the same number that switched from the iPod to the Creative Zen: http://it.asia1.com.sg/newsdaily/news004_20041129. html

Why a portable DVD player? A portable HD player would be more flexible usage-wise. Oh, that aleady exists: iBook.
