Can we also get the DOJ to sue QWERTY keyboard manufacturers? Because Dvorak is a much more efficient layout, but all those bastards at logitech and microsoft keep putting out an inferior product.
Since when has producing an inferior product been a sign of a monopoly. I know this is unbelievably difficult for engineers to understand, but the market not the specs dictate sales.
For all of you who are trying to pursuade Microsoft to not bundle software: Shut the Hell up. I wake up every day and thank God that Microsoft put Winzip virually out of business by bundeling a free.zip decompressor in XP. I am always grateful that I can go to any computer in the world and load up my MSN profile. Everytime I buy a new piece of hardware I am graced with 90% of the drivers being installed. There is nothing keeping users from downloading a competing product.
7/11 may not be the best restraunt but I'll be damned if they arn't convenient.
It's a basic marketing technique that should be practiced by all marketing firms. Acknowledging your competitors gives them undue credibility. Watch any paper towel commercial, they will never give the name of their competitor, because that would imply their competitor is a worthy adversary. Instead all advertising compares it to "leading brand" or some other ambiguous label.
The IE platform is about as effective as it can be. Security fixes are not considered a new version, and the feature set is as complete as I would want at the core level. Linux may be fixed within a day, but updates are difficult and obtuse to aquire, be happy our friends at microsoft are securing a stable project instead of stabilizing a secure product.
Wow, little suprised to see Walla Walla college listed on New York times. Most of my friends chose to go there, unfortunate it got a a bad light from a highschool dropout though considering it is one of the best computer engineering programs in the state.
I still don't see whats wrong with I.E. I don't have any spyware, I don't get any popups, I don't get viruses. I use Internet Explorer or exploiter or exposer or whatever monicker has been created for it now with no problems after installing the Google Toolbar a year ago. Perhaps the question isn't when will the internet explorer users wakeup to security, but when will open source nerds wakeup that sometimes good enough, is good enough, and the ability to in real time debug javascript in a web browser just isn't important to more than a handful of web developers.
Or they will tell you that the Apple HD Cinema Display is the best monitor for the job. I use one in graphic design, and with 2 adjustments to my printer settings get almost perfect screen -> print comparisons. I can't think of a better monitor for graphic design than a 23" Apple HD LCD, and thats on a PC.
Not to mention, good luck finding a 23" CRT with adequate refresh rates at that size and smaller dot pitch, higher contrast ratio and widescreen for less than 2k. LCDs are fighting and winning a good portion of the market for good reason.
All of a sudden mountain climbers walk off cliffs, planes crash into mountains, boats run into bridges, men have to stop and ask directions and small puppies go unfound. Better hope the next 9/11 isn't a foggy day.
For the record. The original author doesn't care, the statement was made as much to the general public for future reference as it was to my specific usage error.
That being said, considering the disorder of the English language, usage is the only rule which has consistantly shaped the evolution of the official usage, just as it has our spellings which we now take for granted.
It could also be rationalized that the statement "CG will replace actors." Was in reference to the common statement that. "CG will replace actors because CG will attain a level of photorealism equal to reality." (With an implied premise for the conclusion that CG will replace actors.) The full statement does infact "Beg the question" because it's premise dictates the conclusion and the premise itself is in question.
Actors will always be around. I always laugh when people say that CG will replace all actors... which begs the question... why on earth would I try to replicate human expression... when I could just film it! That being said, CGI Jokeys are, when on the right track, actors. CG will fade out quite a bit in the next decade, we've already put CG everywhere it can go, and some places it shouldn't, so now it's time to take a breath and figure out what it was actually good for. Miniatures can look better, be built quicker, and most importantly be cheaper than CG. People arn't born in side computers (yet) so we don't have an innate interaction with computers yet. As soon as we can interface as well with a computer as an artist can with a pen and a piece of paper, we're getting somewhere.
Yeah I can see it now. New hot technology platform released with lightning fast speeds, and broad industry appeal. Yep, thats somthing Microsoft won't touch with a 6 foot long stick.
Please... if Cell proves to be a useful and profitable platform, Microsoft will move in.
Why would I want low bitrates on my surround material? This sounds like about as good of an idea as a surround sound tape deck. Give me high bitrate, high quality, low compression audio if it's going to be surround.
Let me make it simple for you. 1 tip. Pay me 15 bucks an hour, charge your client at least 20 and save yourself double the time it would take me or another artist to do it for you. I don't code anymore because I can outsource the custom code I need at even less than I charge and I don't spend 3 times what would be necessary for a competant programmer to do the same job.
Actually I don't believe that placing arms in outer space is illegal under that treaty. After reading it am I wrong in concluding that only WMDs are forbidden in earth orbit, and that pure demilitarization would be limited to celestial bodies such as the moon?
I'm not sure whether or not Nintendo is legally in the right, but I feel they actually have a very good position. Nintendo wants to protect it's child friendly attitude Ala Disney, and if a little kid is bumbling along looking for a Zelda game background for his computer and SHAZAM suicide girls comes up... that could be bad for Nintendo's image.
Of course all of you ignore the fact..
A) It's been proven to keep my room toasty through experimentation and
B) It's keeping my toes warm right now:)
Also my sound system puts out alot of heat when running.
A few months ago when I still had my 57" HD tv.. it REALLY kept my room warm, just turn it on and poof it's time to open a window.
Seriously my roommate and I are planning on trying to keep our heating bill to a minimum by running our computers 24/7 and using them as nice little 400watt space heaters. Here I am trying to waste more power you want to save it. shameful.
Ummmm... that assuming evolution creates the SAME creature. You have to take into account, not THIS result, but all possible results. Therefore your data is meaningless, you would need to calculate the probability of LIFE, not humans. Thats like calculating the chances that I was going to write this reply, which are probably equally small and insignificant. Or that I'm going to be killed seconds after clicking submit and then my killer chokes on my blood.
The chances of YOU are already in the billions and thats just from two sets of genes. The chances those two sets of genes combining into you in such a way to lead you to Slashdot.org is probably incalculatably small.
Sorry but your data is just a big number on a calculator not anything meaningful.
I believe in God and Evolution, but what you are referring to is the domain of occum's razor. It was designed specifically for situations like "scientific creationism". I agree, mixing science and philosophy should only be done when the philosophy can be tested I.E. It's not good for society to kill your friend. That is testable. Not "There might be another answer therefore we must assume the most likely is wrong." Which is by definition untestable and therefore not science, only speculation from the peanut gallery.
Servers see in increase BitTorrent's ports.

OMG!!! G$$GLE has another huge security flaw, yet another reason to use linux!!!

Yeah I would have given him a +1 Funny, even if he is serious.

A little program called Photoshop. And a larger program called Windows XP.

Best way to shorten relay time? Maybe with a tachyon laser.

If by tipping point you mean Killer App, you're completely correct, except Linux IS the Killer app, look where that got Apple.

My bad I got lost in the forums... Disregard my reply.
