  1. Amish are Christians, not Communists on Gates Elaborates on IP Communists · · Score: 1

Communism was invented after the Amish were well established. Their roots go back to the killing fields of Switzerland and the Anabaptists.

The Anabaptists believed in a radical almost hippy-like form of Christianity. They were a very large threat to the power-mongers of the day. And so the Lutherins, the Catholics and the Calvinists, (who were at war with each other) all agreed to slaughter the Anababtists.

The Anababtists then dispersed throughout Eastern Europe. After a time a lot of them ended up in America. They are not and never were Communists. They do not currently work to destroy the system of Capitalism. They are hard-working members of society for the most part and are not envious of the wealthy and powerful.

This is how I see it. Anyone who is actually a Menonite or Amish want to comment?

  2. Curruption happens in every system on Gates Elaborates on IP Communists · · Score: 1

The way that the health care system is bleed is insidious. There are shell companies that hire other shell companies, issue bonds, default on the bonds.

The elderly are put on every drug a doctor can think of and the government picks up the check.

Meanwhile millions of us have no healthcare at all.

One could make the arguement that any profit in health care above a certain amount means that the entity making the profit is not working for the public good. And so a lot of so-called not for profit hospitals are being sued by public interest groups who argue that these so-call not for profit hospitals no longer meet the requirements for being tax exempt charities.

So, the system is trying to work. But very powerful people have planned to live for free off of these so-called charity hospitals. And for that reason they have bought off the politicans and regulators. It is similar to what has happened with copyright and patent law. The powerful game the system.

There are many more things that one can do with a computer than just use it for graphics. As a matter of fact there are a lot of systems that don't have graphics in them at all.

And that is why I said runlevel 3 like command line.

When configuring graphics hardware you can set this runlevel so that the system will not load Xwindows. If you want to mucky around with the Xwindows intialization it is possible to ssh over to the box and change the X windows initialization files. Or you can do it from a command line which is what you get at runlevel 3 in Redhat. I was wondering if there is the same kind of thing on a MAC. Or does it not matter because it is all propriatory? This is a very important feature when you have stated in use the wrong device drivers.

When I spec out software I like to do it modularly. Some would call this object oriented, but I think that object oriented is a specific type of modular programming.

And then for each module you have well defined behavior.
You can contract or shop out the various pieces. And that way you can have parts that will work for what they are supposed to do, and other parts that need one more time through the design spiral.

It would be like if you designed a car, you don't cut the car from a single piece of metal. You have various systems, braking, power train, fuel system, etc. If any one part doesn't fulfill it's requirements, then you can still use the other parts. That is how I also design software.

What they have here seems like people who didn't design the stuff with rigourous requirements documents. There must be some part of this system that they can salvage.

  16. Capitalism vs Corporate Finance on Who Invests in Spyware Companies? · · Score: 1

I maintain that Capitalism from a micro economic point of view is a description of how people behave.

On a macro level it turns into a set of rules and regulations.

I also think that, for the most part, the system works as well as the people who are really in charge are honest and not just out for themselves, but do their real duty and fulfill the requirements of their offices.

I have the same kind of righteous indignation towards people who foster civil wars, drain chemicals everywhere, rob everyone in sight etc. But, honestly, doesn't this happen in any system regardless of the form of finance?

I believe that you have issues with the way that corporate governance works. However, the controls in place are doing what they are supposed to do. If they were not we would never hear about things such as Enron, Haliburton, or whatever other finance scandal is current in the press. It would all be covered up.

I think that there is a certain element of the super-wealthy who would love to have a return to the days of Fuedalism. In their minds they are still the ruling class. But these people want to do this without any responsibility. And the current system of corporate governance can be considered Corporate Fuedalism.

But in terms of quid pro quo, capitalism works. I give you this, you give me that. Simple.

The matter of corruption in corporate finance is an important concern of anyone who wants accoutability in the way things are run. I had had authored your post I would change the word capitalism in the first sentance to modern corporate finance.

It isn't easy for these people to regulate these complex markets. And for the most part the explosion of technology has resulted from the activities of these markets. It is regretable that they have corruption. And if you have any ideas that can make them better, then I am sure that are people who will listen to you and consider what you say.

The continents are continuously colliding and then separating. Then it happened again (millions of years later) and the coast line went along the Delaware river, up the Hudson, Up through Lake Champlaign, and through the Saint Lawrence River. Then it happened again which left New England, New Jersey, The Georges Bank, Nova Scotia.

I was on the National Map and noticed that there was a giant crater shape at Pawtuckaway State Park in New Hampshire. It looked very interesting. It is the remnants of an ancient volcano. New England used to be an island chain like Japan is. There are all kinds of extinct volcanos here which is where you find giant quartz inclusions. I have seen blocks of quartz that are the size of my desk. I know where there are quarries in which you can find all kinds of very cool minerals. Giant mica sheets, huge crystals of beryl, quartz, etc. This is a result of the volcanism that used to be here.

Very cool. If you are interested in this may I suggest that you search the web for geologic maps?
