I wasn't quite sure what to make of it. On the one hand, I think people are being alarmist. On the other, I think history is littered with the unitended negative consequences of a technology we didn't understand. For those complaning about Altavista's and other's portals, there's a nice little solution. If you use IE 5 and windows, that is. I'm sure there's something similiar for other browsers/OSes. The quick search accessory from ms. You get it as part of the Web Accesories Pack. It lets you type "ly search for this" in the address bar which searches lycos for "search" "for" "this". Or type "av thiscompany -host:thiscompany.com" to do a custom Altavista search. You can even "teach" it to use engines it doesn't have built in, like google. I love it.

  14. because any new feature would be copied on Does 'Open Source' Have To Mean 'Free'? · · Score: 5

Like it or not, in the consumer arena, program (and OS) upgrades because they provide unique features to the consumer. If Adobe puts a new feature in Photoshop, it takes a while for the six-zillion Photoshop clones to copy it, for example. But if they opened their source, the clones could have the new feature out a LOT quicker.
Personally, I think this would be a good thing, as it would tend to check "featuritis" that is so rampant. Programs would cease competing on features and start competing on UI, stability, security, etc. Unfortuantely, the software business (I'm talking non-games) exists now on featuritis to sell upgrades and I don't see the software companies moving away from that.

Have you ever really thought about the fact that putting on a seat belt only affects yourself? Why should we have a law? All thanks to the rampant distrust of the Government, whose power is being taken away (and in most cases, rightly I think) . . but unfortunately, not returned to the We The People, but instead to the god of The Bottom Line.

When I talk about individual rights, people look at me like I have horns coming out of my head. When I say "you know, it's a little ridiculous that we have mandatory seat belt laws to prevent me from being stupid because people don't want to pay for it." Everything's about the $$$.

"Don't SMOKE, FOR GOD'S SAKE! IT COSTS MONEY!". You watch, next they'll be coming after high-fat foods and alcohol because of the "societal costs" -- they already are coming after guns. I mean, I'm for gun control but HAVE THE BALLS TO CHANGE THE LAWS instead of suing.
