I agree with whoever modded this funny. We've got three Dell laptops that have had between them one problem, total, in more than a year and a half. For unknown reasons, the battery in my 600m stopped working. Called tech support. Next day, a courier takes the battery. Day after, I get the battery back. This is pretty much as good as it gets.

See that and raise you a NAD CD-Player circa 1985 that only cost ~$500 new that's still working fine. The display is shot to hell, but it still plays my CDs, including CD-Rs beautifully. Ultimately, you get what you pay for.
When people ask about the difficulty of nethack and SLASH'EM, they are usually told the following (on rgrn).
Commercial games want you to win.
Nethack doesn't care either way.
SLASH'EM wants you DEAD.
Using some right now - not battery powered, just engineered to sit inside the ear canal and block ambient sound with expanding rubber sheathes on the buds. Sony EX71s - $95 in Australia. Very nice. Small children on my bus don't bother me anymore. If you want something more serious, then you're looking at buying something from Shure or similar, which will set you back a minimum of ~$170AU up to $800 or so.

No Nethack?
