to me it always seems they really love being inspired by open source geniuses.
m$ for instance really bases a lot of their inventions on already established opensource models but brews their own proprietary soup out of it.
apple in my eyes takes what it can get from OSS but only gives back a minimum and that often in a form that it is hard to use. (see KHTML)
me as a linux fetish put all my hopes and prayers into sonys PS3.
since apple/microsoft/intel more and more try to get rid of us linuxers i think the future of linux is in the cell processor.
also the ps3 used as standardized personalcomputer would take away a lot of work to figure out drivers and sh*t.
i once had to deliver a solution for that problem to a friend.
i made him a php script that detects the content directory and generates a javascript-website which links into the content directory with an encrypted javascript-link which cannot be used by spiders.
the content directory is being renamed to some random name every hour. the error404 leads people to the entry-page, in case they surf the content dir while it is being renamed.
i have some insight into the record industry, and be told: 99% of all illegal mp3 releases are forced by the "legal" industry itself just to push the promotion. its all a funny game... first the EU brings out a law which makes circumventing a technical copyprotection a crime. then they bring out a law which forbids internet-providers to log connection data.... think about that.
when i started into the web back then i had to make a choice:
either use the mouse or use the modem due to single COM port on that computer.
so i had to surf via keyboard strenghtening my keyboardskillz.
im pretty thankful over that nowadays:)
Dennis Kuschel from Germany already did a similar project years ago.
check his german page http://mycpu.dr.ag/ or his english page http://mycpu-en.dr.ag/
Dennis also wrote a custom OS with network stack and a c64-compatible basic interpreter for his homebrew-computer.
