I'd agree with you on the parents issue. However, as gov't is becoming more paternalistic towards children, it only follows that everyone is going to have to take a larger responsiblity in ensuring children aren't exposed to this type of contect as well. Again, not saying I agree. Simply saying the groundwork is being laid (or has already been).

The supreme court just ruled that minors are not totally responsible for their own actions.... at least not to the extent that adults are.

If we accept this logic, then we must also accept the conclusion that minors should not be exposed to influences that might cause them to go "over the edge".

I am not saying I agree with the SD decision, but one must have consistent logic...

As I mentioned in another thread, this is MUCH different than trying to uniquely identify a person based upon an image. All the phone needs to do is see if the image COULD be you with a moderately high degree of certainty. A heavy white man who mugs a small black woman would not pass this test. This is not intended to be an absolute guarantee it is you... simply remove a whole lot of people from being able to use your phone.

Contrast this with criminal prosecution intent: I must prove this image is not of the other 4,999 guys who fit a very close image profile.

Do they really need to be? Unlike usage for criminal prosecution, this doesn't have to be near 100%. If you can make it good enough to reject 99% of the population as being you, then the odds of a mugger using your phone are about 1%. That would dramatically reduce theft of phones.

Yea. Those muggers always take the time to analyze your technology, realize that you need facial-recognition, then say "cheese, sucker".

No security technology is foolproof. None. However, if it works as advertized, it is a nice security feature.

If I am caught up in the fallacy of : "if it is illegal, it is theft". Then everyone else is caught up in "if it's not theft, it must be moral"...

I do not believe I am incorrect, however. The reason counterfeiting is illegal is because it is an indirect form of theft. Otherwise, all I am doing is "duplicating" money... Let's take away the word "theft". If I print my own money, I have hurt the rest of society. I cannot point to any one person and show how they have been harmed, but I have harmed society as a whole. When I "duplicate" someones work without compensation as others have to, I have harmed those folks. No amount of careful word choosing makes it any different.

If you don't want to pay for music... fine. You do not have to listen to it. I pay for the ten or so songs per year that I think are worth paying for.

Its theft. Get over it. When I use my printing press to print money, I am guilt of counterfeiting. However, I have stolen a microscopic amount of money from every person with that currency. I may not be charged with "theft", but I am a thief. In the same way, when a portion of folks take someting they are not entitled to, it drives up the cost to those who do so legally.

    You are a thief.
